Weight – 300 pounds
The 2019 Hoosier Huddle Countdown is well underway now and there are only 64 days until the Indiana Hoosiers take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium to battle the Ball State Cardinals. Today’s countdown article focuses on a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman that is yet to see the field for the Hoosiers: Ryan Smith.
The state of Ohio is one of the stronger states for high school talent in the country and Loveland is in the thick of one of the strongest areas of talent. Ryan Smith grew up in Loveland and played for one of the best high school programs in the Midwest, starring as an offensive and defensive lineman at Moeller High School. As a sophomore, he was a member of a state championship winning squad. He ended up posting 24 tackles with 3.5 sacks in 2014 and then made 48 tackles with seven sacks and fumble recoveries as a senior. He also started on the offensive line and allowed only one sack all season. In addition to his role on Moeller’s football team, he lettered in basketball.
Smith came to Indiana prior to the 2017 season and redshirted his true freshman campaign. He did not see any game action in 2018 but he was an offensive scout team player of the week for the Ohio State game. Smith appears to be behind a number of players on the depth chart, including younger players like Aidan Rafferty, Michael Katic and Matthew Bedford. Time will tell if Ryan Smith can work his way up the roster and into the mix along the line.
