Countdown to Kickoff: #74- Matt Bjorson
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 225 pounds
Hometown: Hinsdale, IL (Hinsdale Central)
Class/Position: Freshman/Tight End
Bjorson was a member of the 2018 signing class after having an all-state caliber senior season at Hinsdale Central. He finished his three-year career with 51 catches for 822 yards and 12 touchdowns. He earned the West Suburban Silver Offensive Player of the Year. Matt’s father Kris also played tight end at the Division I level from 1989-92 at Cincinnati.
Heading into the 2018 season, tight end is a position of depth, however it’s unknown who will win that battle for playing. According to Bjorson he needs to, “mature more, put on some more weight. Get stronger, faster. Then, as you know, learn the plays”, but he believes he “will be in a good spot with these two strength and conditioning coaches (David Ballou and Matt Rhea).”
Bjorson brings some pass catching ability to the tight end room and if he can add the weight he needs to over the summer he’ll be a nice option for IU to turn to down the road. With the implementation of the new redshirt rule, he is a perfect candidate to take advantage of playing in any four games over the season before using a year of eligibility.
