Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 28 Days (A'Shon Riggins)
Height: 6’0’’
Weight: 187 pounds
Hometown: Hamilton, Ohio (Hamilton)
Year: Junior
Position: Defensive Back
Coming out of Hamilton High School, A’shon Riggins played three different positions on the football field, defensive back, wide receiver and quarterback. Riggins lettered in both football and basketball in high school, and is a tremendous all around athlete. The fact that he has played and was successful at all three positions just shows you how well he knows the game. He was rated the number 53 prospect in Ohio by Rivals nand the number 2 cornerback by Scout.
As a freshman, Riggins played in 12 games with eight starts. He tallied 37 tackles, 35 solo, one sack and two tackles for a loss. He had one interception, nine pass break ups which ranked him at second on the team and one forced fumble. He had an impressive freshman season and was named to All-Freshman honorable mention by BTN.com
Last season he struggled with injuries appearing in six games making three starts but he still contributed to the Hoosier defense. Riggins made 14 tackles, nine solo with 5 pass break-ups. After struggling with injuries he got to see field time again in the cream and crimson scrimmage this year and he looked just as sharp as he has in the past.
He is a player that they are going to be lucky to get back and one they hope stays healthy. Indiana is going to look to use his experience as a strength in the defensive unit because of the overall youth and inexperience of actual game time for many. He will need to be a leader in the upcoming season and play a big role defensively if the Hoosiers are going to want to continue to have a strong defensive presence.
