Countdown to Kickoff: #1- Juwan Burgess
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 191 pounds
Hometown: Tampa, FL (Plant High School)
Class/Position: Redshirt Freshman/Defensive Back
Well folks, the day Hoosier football fans have been waiting for is almost here. IU football is one day away from the start of the 2018 season against FIU.
For our final Countdown to Kickoff, we look at Juwan Burgess. The Tampa native is one of three Plant products who signed in the 2017 class along with Whop Philyor and Thomas Allen. At one point, Burgess was committed to USC, but he switched to IU.
Burgess redshirted the 2017 season. During his senior year of high school, Burgess had 63 tackles, 41 solo, and three interceptions. He was ranked the No. 42 prospect in Florida by ESPN. Burgess was a track and field standout in high school, and he brings tremendous speed to the safety position for IU.
While Jonathan Crawford and Kahlil Bryant are the obvious starters at safety, Burgess is a solid option for the Hoosiers on the safety depth chart. I expect Burgess to see playing time off the bench as well as fellow redshirt freshman Bryant Fitzgerald and true freshmen Devon Matthews and Jamar Johnson. Although young, the safeties are a very talented group, and Burgess is one example of that young talent.
