Well, Hoosier fans, we’ve made it to the final day of the 2024 Hoosier Huddle Countdown! Over the past 100 days, the Hoosier Huddle staff featured every player on the 2024 roster in anticipation of the season opener tomorrow, August 31st, against the FIU Golden Panthers. Today, we look at the Hoosier’s pair of number 1’s veteran wide receiver Donaven McCulley and ODU transfer Shawn Asbury II.

COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: # 1 – Shawn Asbury II

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 199 pounds

Hometown: Stafford, Virginia

High School: North Stafford

Class/Position: Senior / Defensive Back

A unanimous three-star and top-40 recruit out of Virginia, Ashbury initially started his collegiate career at Boston College before transferring to Old Dominion and finally IU.

Ashbury hit the ground running as a freshman for Boston College, appearing in seven games and logging five tackles for the Eagles. However, his season was cut short when an injury to his arm forced him to miss the final five games of the season. Following the season, Ashbury transferred to Old Dominion.

Ashbury had a breakout season as a sophomore at ODU, appearing in 11 games with three starts. He showed himself to be a consistent playmaker for the Monarchs, totaling 32 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, one interception, and one fumble recovery.

As a junior, Ashbury had his best season to date, totaling 93 tackles, 6 TFLs, 4 pass breakups, and an interception. This season included three double-digit tackle games and a streak of four consecutive games with a TFL. All of this earned Ashbury an All-Sun Belt honorable mention.

Coming into the 2024 season, Ashbury looks to continue his success in his first season with the Hoosiers. As a proven playmaker who will be sharing the field with veteran DBs D’Angelo Ponds and Josh Sanguinetti, Ashbury seems poised to do just that. Look for him to have a breakout season and help distinguish himself in IU’s defensive backfield.
