The Hoosier Huddle countdown to kickoff is almost halfway complete! Fifty-seven days remain until Indiana’s first game of the season against Iowa in Kinnick Stadium. Today, we will highlight a newcomer to the 2021 Hoosier squad, David Holloman.

David Holloman (Freshman)

Hometown: Auburn Hills, Michigan

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 215 Pounds

Position: Running Back

A few years ago, Tom Allen identified speed as an area needing improvement for his team, and since then has become hyper focused on this trait in player development and recruiting. He found that, and more, in freshman running back David Holloman. Holloman was a 3-star prospect by 247Sports out of Avondale High School in Michigan. The tri-sport athlete rushed for 1,236 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior (played just two games in his senior season due to COVID-19) and earned all-conference and Sports Illustrated All-American candidate honors for his performance. He flashed his speed by adding a touchdown each in punt and kick return duties, but he was truly able to showcase his abilities in timed races. Holloman ran a 4.29 40-yard dash in the World Bowl Hall of Fame National Combine in Orlando and beat that time with a 4.22 on the recruiting camp circuit. Twice during track season he qualified as a regional finalist in the 100m dash, and once he qualified in the 200m. Tack on the fact he was a four-year letter winner in basketball and all-state selection in that too, and Tom Allen has a heck of an athlete on his hands – and Holloman has yet to turn 18.

So how will all this high school success translate to the collegiate level? That is yet to be seen. Indiana certainly had its fair share of turnover in the running back room this offseason – running backs coach Mike Hart returned to his alma mater Michigan and Stevie Scott headed to the NFL’s New Orleans Saints in undrafted free agency – so playing time will be available to be earned under new running back coach Deland McCullough. Sampson James brings the most returning experience, while former five-star USC transfer Stephen Carr will look to make his mark in what will be his final season at the collegiate level. David Ellis and Tim Baldwin Jr both saw a bit of time at running back last season, and Holloman is joined by Trent Howland as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. Whether he sees significant time this season or not, Holloman is sure to be a contributor as his career progresses. He runs and catches out of the backfield well for his age, so his biggest area of improvement will be in pass protection.

Holloman will wear the number 33 jersey this season.
