The 2021 Countdown to Kickoff is more than 50% complete! There are only 49 days remaining until the Indiana Hoosiers kickoff the 2021 campaign by traveling to Iowa City to face the Iowa Hawkeyes in a critical season-opening contest. Today’s countdown piece features a pair of profiles, Sam Daugstrup and Brett Wethington.

Name: Brett Wethington

Hometown: Thorntown, IN (Western Boone)

Position: Linebacker

Year: Freshman

Height/Weight: 6’0”/210 pounds

Breaking into the linebacker rotation at IU has become increasingly difficult as the Hoosiers have recruited extremely well and look well-stocked at the position for the current and near future. Being a walk-on is about more than just trying to get into the lineup, it’s about helping the program in any way possible and having a player that produced like Brett Wethington did in high school can only help.

A redshirt freshman from Thorntown, Indiana, Wethington was a star athlete at Western Boone High School. He played linebacker and running back and racked up numbers at both spots. He was a team captain that had 174 tackles, ten sacks, five forced fumbles and an interception. He also rushed the ball 245 times for 1,794 yards and 20 touchdowns. Western Boone won back-to-back state titles in 2018 and 2019 as Wethington was named first-team all-state. He also lettered in basketball, baseball and track and even excelled in the classroom, earning all-state honors.

Wethington came to Indiana as a walk-on and did not see any game action in 2020.
