Ohhhhhhh boy here we go. After a two game win streak, it all comes down to the Bucket Game for Indiana, as they look to make a third straight bowl game. Purdue is also sitting at 5-6 after a road win against a very sub-par Iowa team, which adds to the intrigue of what should be one of the best Bucket Games in recent memory. The Hoosiers turned to the ground early and often last week in a 41-0 win on Senior Day, as both Cole Gest and freshman Morgan Ellison had big days running the ball. My matchup of Richard Lagow vs. Kiy Hester went in favor of IU, as he was able to find the tight ends over the middle of the field all day with great success, according to PFF College Football (see below). This week’s matchup centers on the passing game again, but this time with an IU defender in the spotlight.

The annual Old Oaken Bucket Game is always a big deal in the state of Indiana. It’s important for bragging rights, recruiting and program momentum. There is no denying that this year’s clash, the 120th meeting of the Bucket game, between the two 5-6 rivals looms even larger than usual. Indiana is going for their fifth straight victory in the series and this is the first meeting between program leaders Tom Allen and Jeff Brohm. Perhaps most importantly, both teams need a win to reach bowl eligibility and earn themselves a postseason berth and all the perks that come with it.

Game Notes: The Indiana Hoosiers will be honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Rose Bowl team. In addition, Saturday is Senior Day and 22 Indiana seniors (along with cheerleaders, managers and band members) will be going through Senior Day festivities. This is the final home game for these Hoosiers and there’s no doubt they’d like to go out on a winning note.

IU is back in the win column! After an ugly, yet solid win on the road, IU still has their hopes for a third straight bowl game alive. Richard Lagow has now started two consecutive games, and the job looks to be- and should be his until the season comes to a close, bowl game or not. I, for one, think it is the best move for IU this season, and this is something that the writers at HoosierHuddle felt was needed to possibly save Indiana’s season. Since being reinserted after Peyton Ramsey’s injury at Maryland, 21 has been exceptional for IU. He nearly pulled off the win against the Terps, and then followed that up with solid performances against Wisconsin and Illinois. On the other side of the field this week is an interesting Rutgers team, that actually has flown under the radar for most of the year. They rattled off three straight Big Ten wins before losing to Penn State last weekend, and if they didn’t collapse against Eastern Michigan, they would be sitting at 5 wins and just 1 away from a bowl game. Nonetheless, they are led by their defense, and that is what my matchup this week is centered on.

The Indiana Hoosiers entered last Saturday’s contest in Champaign knowing they had to win three straight contests in order to reach a third straight bowl game. While the performance wasn’t always pretty, IU did more than enough to accomplish the first part of their task as they downed the Illini in somewhat comfortable fashion. This week, they return to Bloomington for Senior Day, and the second must win game of their season.

The Indiana Hoosiers need to win their final three games in order to reach bowl eligibility and play in the postseason for the third straight season. First year head coach Tom Allen and his squad have had to battle a brutal schedule and an inordinate number of costly injuries but none of that will stem the disappointment if the dream of a bowl game disappears with another loss this Saturday. The stakes were laid bare in a team meeting on Sunday.

What’s at Stake: The Indiana Hoosiers have now dropped three straight games. The first was in overtime to Michigan (again), the second was a defeat to Michigan State that saw IU control the action for most of the way and the third was to Maryland and largely due to massive special teams collapses. A loss here means the Hoosiers need to win three straight games just to reach bowl eligibility and two of those contests are on the road. Wisconsin is the third top ten team IU will be battle this season and it’s the last chance for a signature win in the 2017 season. Wisconsin has much bigger things at stake. They are in the driver’s seat for the West division title and sit at number nine in the first College Football Playoff rankings. They know they will need to go unbeaten if they are to make the “final four” and the game against IU is simply “take care of business” for the Badgers. The previous four games against Wisconsin have been absolute horror-shows for IU with the Hoosiers losing 83-20, 59-7, 62-14 and 51-3. If nothing else, the Hoosiers are expected to put up a much better fight than that.

Oh boy. For the third season in a row, IU is now in “must-win” mode much earlier than they should be. At 3-5, a bowl game is definitely still on the table, but IU would have to win 3 of their last 4 to get to 6. Wisconsin is IU’s last shot at a “Breakthrough” moment in the regular season, and I think the Hoosiers will be ready come kickoff on Saturday. Wisconsin is pretty much the same team as last year, and they have just found the formula to winning in the Big Ten. Grind you out on defense, then just squeak out enough on the other side of the ball while taking care of it to rack up some wins. The Badgers are tough again, but our matchup this week has a huge impact on their games and could let IU grab the upset win if it goes in their favor.
