2013 Preview: Week 7: Michigan State Spartans

2013 Preview: Week 7: Michigan State Spartans

Welcome back to our series previewing the 2013 Indiana football schedule week-by-week. Last time we finally kicked off Big Ten play with the Hoosiers Week Six matchup against Penn State. However, that doesn’t mean that Week Seven doesn’t hold its own significance for Indiana. It is in fact the Hoosiers first road game of the season. Yes, that’s right, the program that has played neutral site games against Ball State and traveled to the northeast to face UMass, will not be playing away from Memorial Stadium until the second weekend in October.

In addition, this isn’t just any old road trip. No sir, the Hoosiers will be traveling north to battle for The Old Brass Spittoon. The Hoosiers have not had much success historically in this rivalry as they have won just 14 of the 59 games played. Recent results have not strayed from the norm, as the Hoosiers have not captured the Spittoon since 2006. Last year, however, Indiana put up a fight as they lost in a one-possession game 31-27.

2013 Preview: Top 5 Defensive Players

2013 Preview: Top 5 Defensive Players

Happy Monday! Welcome back to the 2013 Preview Series, where we will take a look at the top 5 Hoosier defenders.  The defense seems to be the key to success for the Indiana football team for the last 15 years and each year the defense seemingly fails to step up and be at the very least mediocre.  2013 is going to be no different.  In order for this Hoosier team to live up to its potential the defensive unit must show some improvement upon a dismal 2012 campaign where Indiana gave up 35.2 points per game.  With the recent news of an injury to starting linebacker Chase Hoobler and the dismissal of Antonio Marshall, a corner who made some plays late in the season in 2012, in addition to the graduation of their two best defensive players, the job becomes that much harder.  Despite all of this the Hoosiers do have some talent returning on the defensive side of the ball, here are the top 5 defensive players for your 2013 Indiana Hoosier football team.

Black Thursday: Hoosiers Lose Starting CB and Two Recruits

Black Thursday: Hoosiers Lose Starting CB and Two Recruits

Thursday was a tumultuous day for coach Kevin Wilson and the Hoosier football program to say the very least. It wasn’t just one problem that the program encountered, as bad news seemingly came in all day.

In the afternoon the program announced that cornerback Antonio Marshall had been dismissed from the team for an “undisclosed violation of team rules.” Marshall was one of the few experienced bright spots returning for Indiana on the defensive side of the football in 2013. The corner started the last seven games of last season, while hauling in two interceptions. He was an obvious starter heading into his senior season. While the program has promising talent waiting in the wings in the secondary, they are losing a player who brings experience off a defense that was the worst in the Big Ten last year. This was not what defensive coordinator Doug Mallory had in mind as an exciting start to camp.

2013 Preview: Top 5 Offensive Players

In 2012 the Indiana Hoosier football team had one of the most prolific offenses in the Big Ten.  Lead by a prolific passing attack, they ended up leading the conference with 311 passing yards per game.  In 2013 the Hoosiers return ten starters from their   offense that was already explosive, and will now have another year under their belt.  This should allow for individual development, as well as further cohesiveness as a unit.

Today, we will take a look at the Top-5 offensive players of the 2013 edition of the football Hoosiers.  However, if you notice one glaring omission, don't be alarmed. I am excluding the quarterbacks from this list due to the fact that the situation is still not settled yet and all three of them are good enough to be in my Top 5.  Don't fret, we will be sure to give you plenty of insight on the quarterback battle as it evolves throughout camp.
