Big Ten East Power Rankings Week 11

Big Ten East Power Rankings: Michigan State Drops Heartbreaker But Still Controls Own Destiny

Big Ten East division power rankings following Week 10:

(1) Ohio State Buckeyes (1); Record: 9-0 (5-0)

Last Week: Won vs. Minnesota 28-14

QB Cardale Jones—187 passing yards, TD, 65 rushing yards, TD—played good enough to beat Minnesota, but not good enough (12 of 22) to create a QB controversy, as J.T. Barrett returns this week. The defense set the tone with an early pick-six by S Vonn Bell, but it was surprising to see them allow 281 yards through the air to the punchless Golden Gophers. That was Ohio State’s 29th-straight conference win, which ties the FBS record.

Coming Up: 11/14: @ Illinois; 11/21: vs. Michigan State

Week Four Big Ten East Power Rankings

Week Four Big Ten East Power Rankings

Big Ten East division power rankings following Week 4:

(1) Michigan State Spartans; Record (1): 4-0 (0-0)

Last Week: Won vs. Central Michigan 30-10

They were out-gained by 15 yards the score was 17-10 in the fourth quarter, so I was tempted to knock the Spartans down a peg. It’s a tossup between MSU and OSU at this point. DE Shilique Calhoun came through with 2.5 sacks and a blocked FG (one of two MSU had). More concerning is the (“not season ending”) injury to LT Jack Conklin.

Coming Up: 10/3: vs. Purdue; 10/10: @ Rutgers

(2) Ohio State Buckeyes (2); Record: 4-0 (0-0)

Last Week: Won vs. Western Michigan 38-12

So, QB Cardale Jones is the man (J.T. Barrett was 1 of 3 off the bench) and he used his cannon arm to wrack up 288 passing yards. Eight different Buckeyes had a catch of at least 15 yards, including RB Curtis Samuel, who had a 40-yard catch and a 40-yard run.

Coming Up: 10/3: @ Indiana; 10/10: vs. Maryland

Fall Camp Big Ten Power Rankings

Fall Camp Big Ten Power Rankings

It is finally August and we are gearing up for fall camps for college football. That means it is time to put out our first 2014 Big Ten Power Rankings. Let me explain one thing first. This is not a prediction of where the teams will finish at the end of the year. It is a ranking based on how strong or weak I think a team is going into fall camp. With that being said, let’s jump right in.

Here are the final power rankings:

(1) Michigan State Spartans (Previous Rank: 2); Record: 13-1 (8-0)

Bowl Game: Won vs. Stanford 24-20

By becoming a more balanced team down the stretch, the Spartans proved they can play with anyone in the country. A team that could have made some noise if the playoffs were in place.

Big Ten Power Rankings: Week 11

Here are this week’s power rankings:

(1) Ohio State Buckeyes (Previous Rank: 1); Record: 9-0 (5-0)

Last Week: Won @ Purdue 56-0

The key stat: Braxton Miller ran the ball just one time. HC Urban Meyer wisely saved his quarterback and allowed him to work on his short-to-intermediate passing (19 of 23).

Coming Up: 11/9: Idle; 11/16: @ Illinois

Big Ten Power Rankings: Week 10

Here are this week’s power rankings:

(1) Ohio State Buckeyes (Previous Rank: 1); Record: 8-0 (4-0)

Last Week: Won vs. Penn State 63-14

Taking advantage of their last opportunity to really impress voters until their season finale, the Bucks crushed Penn State. QB Braxton Miller continues to improve, as does OSU’s young D.

Coming Up: 11/2: @ Purdue; 11/9: Idle

(2) Wisconsin Badgers (Previous Rank: 2); Record: 5-2 (3-1)

Last Week: Idle

After playing just two games in October, the Badgers begin a five-game November stretch in Iowa City. With depth at running back and on defense, they should be OK.

Coming Up: 11/2: @ Iowa; 11/9: vs. BYU
