Hoosier Huddle's College Football Playoff and Bowl Projections December 1

Hoosier Huddle's College Football Playoff and Bowl Projections December 1

A historic splattering. A colossal beatdown. A dominant destruction. A slaughter in the snow. Call it whatever you want to but the stone-cold reality is that the Indiana Hoosiers mercilessly beat the Purdue Boilermakers 66-0 and sent a resounding final impression to the Playoff Selection Committee. That performance, combined with losses by Miami and Texas A&M, all but ensure the Indiana Hoosiers will be included in the first 12-team College Football Playoff when the official bracket is announced on December 8. Indiana probably will not be able to climb into position to host a first-round playoff game but it certainly appears they should be safely in.

No one really wanted to find out but we wondered how the Hoosiers would respond in a close game. On Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, IU fans and coaches found out exactly what would happen with intense pressure as Indiana prevailed over Michigan 20-15. That improved the Hoosiers to 10-0, giving IU their first ten-win season in program history.

The Indiana Hoosiers trailed for the first time all season on Saturday afternoon in East Lansing. The Hoosiers responded to falling behind 10-0 by scoring 47 unanswered points and demolishing the Michigan State Spartans 47-10 in a dominant road win. The victory moved IU to 9-0 for the first time in school history and IU is tied with Oregon atop the Big Ten standings. One week after projecting the Hoosiers into the College Football Playoff bracket as the number ten seed, we are moving IU up one place into the nine seed. That would put Indiana in an extremely interesting game at Notre Dame in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

After six weeks of full college football action, the Indiana Hoosiers are one of two teams that have clinched bowl eligibility. Do not adjust your screen, you read that correctly. The Indiana Hoosiers are 6-0 and join the Miami Hurricanes as the only teams to reach six wins and gain bowl eligibility. Curt Cignetti and his Indiana Hoosiers have much bigger things in mind than just reaching a bowl game but goal number one is always to reach six victories and go bowling and IU’s win in Evanston accomplished that feat.

With the season a quarter of the way through, these projections are nothing more than educated guesses with very little information to guide us. That being said, it’s fun to look forward to the potential options for the Indiana Hoosiers and other Big Ten squads.

A few notes to kick off the projections: the top four teams, according to the College Football Playoff selection committee, will be selected and placed into the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl for the semifinal contests. The winners will meet in the College Football Playoff National Championship in Indianapolis on January 10.

This means the Rose Bowl returns to the traditional Big Ten versus PAC-12 matchup.

I do not have any Big Ten teams in the College Football Playoff. Both Ohio State and Iowa could end up proving me wrong. For now though, I’m going with both schools in a New Year’s Six bowl but neither in the playoff.
