After A Day Of Upsets, What Are Indiana Football’s Best Upset Wins?

c6d6a 6 3872075

On Friday afternoon we saw one of, if not the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA tournament when the second seeded Michigan State Spartans took it on the chin from the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State. That shocking upset got me thinking about what some of Indiana Football’s biggest upsets were.

I went through the IU record book and found quite a few occasions where the Hoosiers pulled off wins against ranked teams as underdogs. Now there are some caveats to my search. First, the AP did not rank teams until 1936, so it is hard to judge some of the pre-ranking games so this list is from 1937 on. I was also hesitant to include the games from the World War II Years (1941-1945) due to the craziness of rosters and honestly it was just easier to keep those teams out of this list. I found 10 upsets that should be noted on this list and it will be in chronological order.

Talking The Old Oaken Bucket Game With Former Hoosier DT Joe Kremer

Earlier this week Hoosier Huddle reached out to friend and former IU player Joe Kremer to get his thoughts about the 2015 edition of the Old Oaken Bucket Game. Kremer played defensive tackle for the Hoosiers from 2003-2007. He started for three years. During his senior year Kremer made 26 total tackles, had 3.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss. Currently, Kremer lives in San Diego with his fiancee Maggie Hannon. He teaches physical education at St. Augustine High School where he also serves as the school’s defensive coordinator. They are ranked 20th in the state of California and, at the time of the interview, were playing in the semi-finals.

Hoosier Fans Share Their Favorite Bucket Game Memories

Earlier this week, we asked Hoosier fans on Twitter to share with us their favorite Bucket Game memories ever. For me, the 2007 win was my favorite. It was the first time IU had beaten Purdue since becoming an IU fan. It was an amazing game and it led to a bowl game. So here are other fans’ memories. I thank everyone for sharing their memories.

The 2015 edition of the Bucket Game will make its way back to West Lafayette for the first time since 2012. The Hoosiers have won back-to-back Buckets for the first time in 20 years and look to win a third straight for the first time since the mid-40’s. Add in the fact that both teams may have something bigger on the line and this game could bring some life into Ross-Ade Stadium.

Throwback Thursday: Week 14 The Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket

We wrap up our Throwback Thursday series with the Hoosiers victory over the Purdue Boilermakers in the Old Oaken Bucket Game. (Yes, I realize we don’t have the wrap ups for the Wisconsin and Ohio State games. My apologies). This win ended the season on a positive note and gave the Hoosiers possession on the Bucket for the first time since 2010.
