What: Michigan State Spartans at Indiana Hoosiers

When: Saturday, October 1 at 8:00 PM

Where: Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana

How to Watch: The game will be broadcast on BTN and you can listen to the radio broadcast on the IU Radio Network.

What’s at Stake: Both teams are trying to rebound from disappointing defeats last week. The Hoosiers turned the ball over five times and fell to Wake Forest and the Spartans were wiped out by Wisconsin. MSU still has dreams of repeating as Big Ten East champions and fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff, a second loss would put those dreams to rest. Indiana is attempting to return to a bowl game for the second straight season and an upset victory over the Spartans would go a long way towards achieving that goal. The two squads play for the Old Brass Spittoon, a travelling trophy the Spartans have retained for seven straight seasons and 16 of the past 18 meetings.

The Indiana Hoosiers have not laid claim to the Old Brass Spittoon since 2006. That has to change if Kevin Wilson is going to continue to turn around this football program. Not only will IU gain another trophy to hoist up, but they will have a marquee win at home, in primetime, against a top-20 team. That’s a lot of boxes that can be checked off for IU. So what do the Hoosiers need to do in order to come away with the trophy? Let’s find out.

After a tough week four loss that dropped Indiana from the ranks of the unbeaten, the Hoosiers are set to welcome the Michigan State Spartans to Bloomington on Saturday night. Like IU, Sparty turned in a lackluster effort last week, when they took a 30-6 drumming from now Big Ten West favorite Wisconsin in East Lansing. MSU has not dropped back-to-back contests since 2012, so IU will have to be sharp on Saturday to try and knock off Michigan State. The matchup that will be instrumental to an IU win in my mind will be…….

The Indiana Hoosiers (2-1) and Michigan State Spartans (2-1) certainly hoped this was going to be a battle of unbeaten teams when the two squads match up this Saturday night under the lights at Memorial Stadium. However, both teams suffered disappointing and frustrating defeats last weekend as IU fell to Wake Forest and Michigan State was humbled by Wisconsin. After the losses, the pair of 2-1 squads will battle for the Old Brass Spittoon in a rivalry game that dates back to 1920 (the Old Brass Spittoon was first presented in 1950). Michigan State fans can be forgiven for not acknowledging this as a rivalry as the Green and White have dominated the series of late, winning seven straight and 16 of the past 18 meetings since 1994.

Fun Fact:
They decided on the “Spartans”, which had been suggested by Stephen G. Scofes and his two brothers Pete and Nick, all natives of Sparta, Greece. The three brothers met with MSU officials at their Lansing restaurant, The Coffee Cup then renamed the Famous Grill, when they told them the story of the Spartan war at Thermopylae, Greece in 480 B.C., where 300 Spartan warriors held back thousand of Persian warriors led by Persia King, Xerxes. Today the Scofes family still honors the Michigan State men’s Basketball and Football teams with trophies awarded to MSU players and faculty, since the banquets began in the Scofes families Coffee Cup and Famous Grill restaurants.

When the Indiana Hoosiers (3-3, 0-2) take the field on Saturday afternoon to face the Michigan State Spartans 5-1 (2-0) they will be playing for something more than just pride and a Big Ten win. They will be seeking to reclaim the Old Brass Spittoon for the first time since 2006 when the Hoosiers knocked off the Spartans 46-21.
