Since 1950, the Hoosiers and the Spartans have battled it out on the football field to make for a rivalry matchup. The Old Brass Spittoon is awarded to the team that can seal the victory. The two teams have met 64 times and Michigan State leads the all-time series record 46-16-2. The Hoosiers defeated the Spartans for the first time since 2006 two seasons ago in a nail biter overtime victory in Bloomington. Last season, they traveled to East Lansing and lost 17-9 so this year after a 3-0 start, they are looking to avenge that loss on Saturday.

The Indiana Hoosiers conclude a three-game home stand with the Battle for the Old Brass Spittoon as they host the Michigan State Spartans in a Big Ten East match-up. The last time in to Bloomington was a 24-21 OT loss for the Spartans, however Michigan State has dominated the Hoosiers since the turn of the century going 12-3. It’ll be the 65th time these two programs have met on the gridiron, with MSU holding a 46-16-2 advantage over IU. Michigan State will be coming off of their open week, which could mean they’ll be rested or rusty.

The Old Brass Spittoon currently belongs to the Indiana Hoosiers for the first time since Terry Hoeppner coached IU to a 46-21 win over the Spartans in 2006. Last season, Indiana recaptured the trophy when they beat Michigan State at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington by a score of 24-21 in overtime. Michigan State leads Indiana in the all-time series with 45 wins, only 16 losses, and two ties. Although IU-MSU isn’t heralded as a classic college football rivalry, which both teams now in the same division, things could heat up if the Hoosiers can do more of what they did last year. The trophy, the Old Brass Spittoon, wasn’t introduced to the series until 1950.

Hoosier fans should know what the Old Brass Spittoon is now, since it is comfortably back in Bloomington for the first time since 2006. The Spartans and Hoosiers renew their trophy game and try and build a rivalry as the series continues in East Lansing on October 21st. This is a game where a win could swing the Hoosiers’ season from good to great. Michigan State is dealing with a lot of turmoil both on and off the field as they try and recover from a 3-9 season and a sexual assault scandal that left several key players dismissed from the team. It’s been 16 years since the Hoosiers have won in Spartan Stadium, but 2017 could put an end to that streak.

Talk about your bounce back wins. Indiana had just lost to Wake Forest at home 33-28 and Michigan State hadn’t lost two games in a row since 2012. This was a great win for IU despite the fact that Michigan State finished the season 3-9. The Hoosiers came back from 14-0 and overcame three missed field goals and several other golden opportunities to put the game out of reach. IU was plus-13.9 in average starting field position and had converted on over 50-percent of their third down opportunities. Overall, it was a great night in Bloomington and a win that was vital to getting to a bowl game.
