The Indiana Hoosiers received a commitment from three-star athlete Trenten Howland out of Joliet, Illinois on Friday morning. Howland is listed by 247 Sports composite rankings as a three-star prospect. 247 Sports lists him as the 10th best player in Illinois and the 33rd best athlete in the country.

According to Allen Trieu from a recruiting expert from 247 Sports Howland is a “big, thickly built athlete. Explosive on the basketball court and translates that over to football where he is a bruising tailback, but can also break longer runs. Physical and is not afraid of contact. Could be a linebacker or running back recruit. At backer, he does not have experience, but has the measureables to play there. At running back, he has to show that he has the wiggle and elusiveness to play that position and be more than just a power back. Has the skill set of a Power 5 prospect, position just has to be determined.”

Howland reminds many people of current Indiana running back Stevie Scott, who also played linebacker and running back in high school. Watch his highlights from HUDL here.

Howland announced his decision on Twitter in honor of his mother’s birthday. His statement read:

First off, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for everything he continues to bless me with on a daily basis. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunities that have been afforded to me because of this great game of football. I would like to thank all the coaches who recruited me throughout the process and who showed interest in getting to know me and my family. I would like to thank all the coaches who have impacted me and helped me grow into the athlete that I am today. Thank you to the Joliet West administration and teachers who push me on a daily basis to be the best student that I can be. To all my teammates past and present, I truly appreciate all that you guys do for me and the brotherhood that we have established. Lastly, I would like to thank my parents and family for being a great example in my life. Mom and Dad, you have provided a great foundation to help me become the young man that I am today. Finally, to my mother, Valerie Brooks, Happy Birthday!! I love you with all my heart and on your special day I would like to announce that I will be committing to Indiana University to further my academic and athletic career. Thank you and God Bless.

Howland is the eighth commitment in Indiana’s 2021 recruiting class which now sits 58th nationally and has an average rating of 85.90 according to 247 Sports. Howland had seven other offers. The list included Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue and Western Michigan.
