Game Recap and Takeaways:

The 14th ranked Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Soccer Program faced off against the 4th ranked Maryland Terrapins on Friday evening in College Park, Maryland. After a hard fought effort, the Hoosiers fell to the Terrapins by a score of 3-2. After this match, the Big Ten standings started to see separation among teams. The Terrapins now rank 2nd in the Big Ten with a conference record of 6-0-2 while the Hoosiers rank 5th in the Big Ten with a conference record of 4-4-0.

As we’ve examined previously, Big Ten play hasn’t been the closest friend to the Hoosiers in the 2025 season thus far. Their non-conference play has been far superior. However, the Big Ten is proving that they can exceed expectations and put together strong performances time and time again, which hopefully helps Indiana’s rank and strength of schedule metrics as we approach the College Cup Playoffs.

Friday’s game, however, was a bit different than previous Big Ten losses for the Hoosiers, as Maryland is truly a National Championship threat. Indiana played them hard, especially on the road behind 5,500 passionate fans. Shot totals were similar between both teams and the Hoosiers had several close chances to take control of the game but, for example, rang the ball of the post like the shot below.

Sometimes the ball doesn’t fall your way. That is life, and that is soccer. For the Hoosiers, this game proved (again) that they can hang with the best and have all the capabilities and mindsets in the world to make comebacks game in and game out. Friday night did not go the Hoosiers’ way, but it is no cause to be discouraged. The Hoosiers are playing good soccer and are putting their pieces together at the right time ahead of Big Ten Tournament and College Cup Playoff play.

Next up, the Hoosiers play the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday, October 31 at 7:30 PM ET in Evanston, Illinois. The game will be on Big Ten+.

Hoosiers Player of the Match:

This award during the 2025 season could honestly be renamed the ‘Palmer Ault’ award, but today I’d like to give the Hoosiers Player of the Match to Charlie Heuer, who bagged his first goal of the season on Friday on a beautiful kick from outside the box. Check it out below.

Heuer is a promising sophomore for the Hoosiers who has played on and off for Coach Yeagley’s side this season, but has almost always made his impact felt when he touches the pitch. Friday night was no different, as Heuer put together an phenomenal performance. I am looking forward to seeing Heuer continue to blossom as he grows in experience under Coach Yeagley and the Indiana Hoosiers.
