@hhlurker It’s been done. A league called Unrivaled and Caitlin was offered a ton. Not sure what’s happened to it.
Dave Portnoy had quite a rant on the salaries today and said he’d love to buy a franchise. Thinks it’s going to skyrocket. Not a Dave fan, except for his dogs, but he’s got a pretty decent track record as a business man.
@socks-shorts-1-2-3-swish Are you sure?
I don't know the numbers for WNBA, but NBA players get a set percentage of all revenue. Most of that is TV. Not just ratings, but ad revenue (driven by ratings)
Team valuation increases don't factor in, though, as far as I can tell.
I would say that CC is undervalued, given her ability to drive ratings, attendance, and merchandise.
It wasn't until the 1970's that stars in all the mainstream male pro sports consistently made the type of salaries that could lead to wealth. Even then, your ham and egger types had to hold 9-5's in the off season. And this was playing for teams and leagues that had a rabid following and had existed for decades already.
It took the WNBA nearly 3 decades prior to the 2024 season to eclipse an average of 6k fans a night, in a season comprised of 60% fewer games at a fraction of the ticket price than/of the NBA. The Clark Effect has brought more eyes, more TV $$ and more exposure to the sport and the league to be sure, but I think it's premature to say if that bump in popularity is permanent.
And these franchise valuations, how much of that can attributed to their connection/affiliation with their NBA franchise counterparts? Would a competing league and franchises with no NBA affiliation be worth anywhere near that figure?
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

piggybacking some of your points. What is more imortant, current valuations or current balance sheets? I suppose this is the same negotiating points being brought up by each side.
Cash flow matters. Valuation doesn't mean shit.

hasn’t he been railing on the league and only watching for CC? Betting on a WNBA franchise is no different than penny stocks of early stage venture investing.
@jdb He’s been railing on the league for the way C.C. has been treated.
This woman is the best thing in the league

She just might be in the sweet spot of the crazy/hot matrix…
I’m not one who usually cares much about people liking or posts going viral but Sophie Cunningham has got quite the crowd right now. Her posts are arguably more popular than CC. This little post my Sophie has 28 million views:

@bradstevens it parallels mls in so many ways. how people can live in places like san diego ny etc on a league min salary is a mystery.
mls franchises are valued at about 400 mil. the league sustained itself on selling franchises with the hope of garnering enough popularity to eventually parlay it into a sustaining tv deal. sort of happened sort of didn't. they got apple tv after everyone ostensibly said no. well now they are basically down to maybe one or two franchises left. it will be interesting to see what props them up going fwd.
once the wbna stops selling franchises. the once in a generation clark phenomenon wears off. where will it be? seems risky as hell
It's already grown beyond the CC effect. Now you have other stars who have made a name for themselves in college who have and are moving on to the WNBA. Paige Beckers might surpass Clark in terms of popularity soon because she's not an annoying bitch. Coming up, you'll have JuJu, assuming she makes a full recovery. Angel Reese, despite also being an annoying bitch who is more well known/popular than she is actually good, carries a ton of eyeballs with her. Doesn't exceed CC, but exceeds her talent level by leaps and bounds.
It was boosted dramatically by Clark and her effect, but it's about more than her at this point and will be even moreso in the future
