Why do we love to scare ourselves?

In the last several years, peak oil, population bomb, y2k, global cooling, global warming, nuclear energy, covid, the Yellowstone eruption, and now Artificial Intelligence.  All of these things are seen as ending civilization as we know it, or worse. All are supported by various “experts” and “ insiders”.  All have economic and social consequences of varying degrees.  One of those is rapidly declining birth rates. That is something to worry about, it’s a fact and has real and tangible consequences.

Sometimes a short life- expectancy is comforting.

I don’t think “we” “love” to do it, but instead are prone to it because humans have evolved to be fearful of things and risk averse as survival strategies.

Fair point. Fear seems to be a default emotion.

Some people do enjoy it. My wife.  She loves horror movies.

I agree, but would argue it's purposely used a lot of times in media, large corps, and governments. The AI is going to end the world and we must regulate it was coordinated to take advantage of our weaknesses.

Death is overrated.
