Looks like the Supreme Court is leaning towards denying late arriving ballots. I think there should be restrictions but, to me. if the ballot is postmarked 3 days before the election date then it should be counted.
I'm with you on the postmarked date.
If something is postmarked up until the day of the election, why should the voter be penalized because the post office runs at a snails pace?
There needs to be a reasonable cutoff, though. Let's be pragmatic about this. If you are going to send in something the day of, it could affect the outcome of something quite important. This isn't filing your taxes so that if the check is received on 4/18 vs. 4/20, it doesn't matter. Elections need decisions, not the shit that enabled J6 and other things. Let's get this shit counted and done and move the hell on.
I mail stuff off for ebay. During winter, it can take up to 2-3 weeks to get things to people when weather is bad.
It's not out of the realm that mail could be delayed in late October, early November. Those people shouldn't be punished for things they can't control.
I could be talked into maybe a week before the election as a cutoff, but that's as far as I'd be willing to go I think.
That is the reason I said postmarked 3 days before the election. I don't like the idea that anyone can see a certain candidate needs more votes because results are already being reported and then being able to go out and get a bunch of mail-in ballots sent in postmarked that day. There needs to be a reasonable cutoff, though. I agree and am not trying to be unreasonable. I would consider even NPT's proposal of 3 days. I'm simply saying, it seems counterproductive to be allowed to mail in your ballot the day of the election and expect that a close election shouldn't be called for days or weeks to account for that.
Not to derail the thread, but are you selling anything interesting on EBAY? Sports cards, perhaps? I've gotten back into that.
@jdb yeah, I do sports cards and also shoes. Odd combo, but it's something fun to do with my youngest... go out and look for stuff at old shops, garage sales, card shows.

The only shit that caused J6 is sitting in the white house.
Amazing that we have had so many other elections go by without ever having that happen before. Nothing caused J6 other than the cry baby traitor that tried to steal an election when he lost.

and I have yet to see proof that has happened....ever.
One of the election deniers wet dream accusation?

How could it be proven?
IMO, the real problem with our elections isn't about too many voters who aren't citizens.
The real problem is in all too many districts the ultimate winner in both parties were destined to win by virtue of having won their party's primary. Thus a comparatively few zealot extremists who vote in the primaries pick the winners.
The net result of the above is our citizens who are politically moderate middle of the road voters are unrepresented. This leaves important elected bodies such as the Federal House of Representives being too divided politically. Divided to the point of being ineffective.

At a deeper level you could see it as citizen apathy. Even in presidential elections voter participation rarely exceeds 70% of the population, in primaries obviously far less. Off the top of my head, I would assume that the minority party could win elections with turnout alone, let alone an independent party that actually represented the middle majority of the population.
We the people just don’t give a shit. It’s easier to just live our lives, pick a team to vote for, cheer come election time and suffer the consequences of corrupt politicians.
HM, am sure you are right about "voters who don't give a shit".
However, IMO, there are far more who live in districts dominated by one party where the results are a foregone conclusion. The voter simply doesn't think his vote will make a difference.
Having said that, I live in a district which isn't competitive. I vote to pat myself on the back for being a good citizen.

It's been a policy for a long time (>20 years?) of at least all of the mainstream media to not report any results at all, even exit polls, for any state until all of the polling places in that state have closed. That started because of a state with two time zones (Florida, where much of the panhandle is in central time, the rest Eastern). The polls closed for most of Florida and results were reported in the 1st hour, causing some people to leave the polls in the panhandle and maybe affect outcomes.
So the only way you'd be able to get a ballot submitted is to wait until well after the polls closed (8 or 9PM, most places) and then start filling out your ballots to get postmarked before midnight. But that probably would not even work. A postmark date does not necessarily indicate the first day that the Postal Service took possession of the mailpiece. Rather, it confirms that the Postal Service accepted custody of a mailpiece, and that the mailpiece was in the possession of the Postal Service by the identified date. So if you want something postmarked with today's date, that probably won't happen if you show up at 9PM. They probably seek to turn them around fast on election day, but it is not instantaneous.
