How did Americans in the 1950’s have such high standards of living?
Counter explanation: we had just finished a world wide war that destroyed the industrial base and working age male population drastically in the entire first world except for the United States.
So we dominated the world for a few decades as a result but when the world caught up, our standards of living started to fall. The Golden Age of the 50s-80s, or so, is an anomaly. For most of human history, working class people had both spouses working hard.
1950’s nostalgia is tiresome. Egged on by political arsonists like Tucker Carlson and Mamdani who insist you ought to be able to live in the same town you grew up in on one middle class income and put all your kids through college.
They treat financial security as if it’s some sort of god given right that could be secured for everyone if only the government changed to their liking.
