Yay, walkouts. Now the billionaires will act differently.
Oh, also:
- Widespread Underperformance: In 2024, 80 public schools in Chicago reported zero students proficient in math, while 24 had zero proficiency in reading. [1]
- Low-Income Student Struggles: Only 35% of low-income 3rd-8th graders met reading standards, and only 19% met math standards in 2025. [1]
- Extremely Low Proficiency in Specific Schools: In 2023, only 26% of 3rd-8th graders read at grade level, and only 18% were proficient in math. [1]
- Absenteeism and Enrollment: In 2025, 40.1% of CPS students were considered chronically absent. Furthermore, CPS has lost over 100,000 students in the past 20 years. [1, 2]
- Impact of Standards Changes: These low results persist even after the Illinois State Board of Education lowered the proficiency benchmarks ("cut scores") in 2025. [1]
@bradstevens same inept politicians will be elected who will hire the same inept consultants who will recommend the same inept superintendents. and the kids will continue to underachieve. rinse repeat
@bradstevens I'm sure more days outside of school will help narrow the massive gaps in educational performance.
My kid's high school is, of course, participating, although at least they told the teachers they are not allowed to walk out. I told my kid I'd personally hide-strap his ass to a pine rail and send him up the Monon Line if I found out he ditched class for this.@bradstevens I'm sure more days outside of school will help narrow the massive gaps in educational performance.

if they miss enough school days, then maybe MAGA will be able to recruit more morons like you 😉
Hopefully he did it anyway. My kid's high school is, of course, participating, although at least they told the teachers they are not allowed to walk out. Bc your kid should think for himself. This isn't (or shouldn't be) one of those life or death things for a kid if they feel differently about something than their parents. You said you hoped he skipped class anyway. So you don't want him to think for himself--you want him to think like you do.Bc your kid should think for himself. Thankfully, he does not.
I'd be fine if he thought differently than I do on the issue these May Day protests are supposed to address. That's a far cry from skipping classes a few days prior to his upcoming AP tests, though. You want to make a political statement? Don't make a dumb one. Feel free to teach your children differently.
And likely lead Chicago to hire additional underqualified people to be teachers. So they can close the education gap by not demanding adherence to any real standards.@bradstevens I'm sure more days outside of school will help narrow the massive gaps in educational performance.

That'll teach those rich folks.

This is how we ended up with hickory
That's fine and fair and you seem like a good, well rounded guy and parent.
