Question about an election if Trump were somehow allowed to run again

Would whatever legislation required to allow for that, open up the possibility that Obama could run for a 3rd term?

And if so, would Obama do it?  How would it go if he did?

Trumps rise in popularity, and as a viable political figure is a reality, in no small part, because of all the people Obama alienated while in office.  But the contrast in coherence, knowledge, statesmanship... couldn't be more striking.

I'm no Obama fan boy... far from it... but as someone that really, really dislikes Trump...The thought of Trump's tantrum's if Obama beat him... might be worth some constitutional crisis.

I don't understand how Obama alienated anyone...other than some people couldn't handle the fact that he was black and was a moderate liberal/democrat.  Both automatically alienating to many conservatives.

He didn't constantly toss insults at the other party (at least not any more than any other normal president).  he didn't get sidetracked on every holiday with attacking conservatives (like Trump does with liberals).  Most of his speeches stuck with words of unity and hope (complete 180 from trump).   The scandals were so few that the tan suit was one of the bigger ones.

@hurryinghoosiers Obamacare, auto bailouts, redefining Title IX, DACA, Rejecting Keystone Pipeline... etc... He was FAR from perfect, and using a sports analogy... I don't think he ever came close to realizing his talent.

But... if it were allowed, and he ran, what would that look like?

No need to imagine what it would look like because it won't happen.

The 22nd Amendment reads that "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

In addition, despite some in the cult arguing that Trump could run on a national ticket as the VP candidate, that's not possible. The 12th Amendment  reads in part:  "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."

So, barring a constitutional amendment, which won't happen, that's that.

@big-ryan Oh, I agree.  But one thing I've learned since around... 2015 or 2016... be careful saying something "won't happen".  If the GOP somehow strengthens their hold on the Senate and House, and MAGA candidates contribute to that happening... to bury your head in the sand and think they won't try it, and that they for sure won't be successful if so... well, I wouldn't do it.

If I'm Obama, and appears there might be any sort of path that way opening up... I might start hinting at running if that were to happen.  That might cool some people's jets a little bit.  But it would be fascinating to see how such an election would play out.

@iunorth can't happen.  not to mention he'll really be old.  i didn't mind obama like my brethren but michelle is a whackjob who i can't stand.  she's a woke lunatic and having heard her in these years that have gone by i'd have zero interest in obama.  but back to the point i don't think trump won bc of obama. i think it was just more how unlikable hilary was.  trump was a novelty.  people liked the idea of an outsider and he spoke to maga, hardworking blue collar americans, and hilary was a horrible bitch.  so it was that.  had obama been able to run a third term i have no doubt he'd have won against trump.  biden was supposed to be obama 3.0.  turned out he was aoc cori bush ilhan 1.0 but we didn't know.  bait and switch

Everyone is going to have policies they disagree with.   In that case, every president in history is alienating lol.

Alienating in my opinion is saying half the country sucks when wishing people a happy holiday etc.

@hurryinghoosiers did you see Cori bush is running again?  Trying to get your band back together.  She’s a Dem socialist this time. Last time she was a blm activist.  Tlaib was here helping her “raise money.”  You should see what the white male dem socialists here who support Cori bush look like. My God. Triumph the comic dog would have had enough content to last a decade from just the pic they posted on instagram.

grow some balls. Stop with the Dem socialist nonsense.  We’re America

All the woke nonsense we're living with today is because of Obama.

@dbmhoosier I don’t believe that. In fact he has condemned it. Repeatedly.  And we didn’t have it during his presidency. Now we had race shit but he is a black Dem. What’s he supposed to do.   It was AOC and blm and cori bush and Bernie etc. his wife is a woke clown but I don’t believe he is. And I also believe but for his status and appearances he’d be divorced banging woke Hollywood actresses.

So like calling anyone interested in voting for someone else a basket of deplorables or someone who clings to guns religion or antipathy?

Bernie wasn't woke the first time he ran.  Still don't think he's down with identity politics, although he strongly pushed class politics.

@bradstevens that's a fair distinction.  the redistribution/economics doesn't necessarily equate to woke

You're reading the 12th wrong as to how it relates to the 22nd. The VP end around is absolutely a viable trick.

I don't think they will try, though.
