Bizarre that ABC reported recreational marijuana use is now legal in Texas. It isn’t.These stories just keep coming.
Tae Heung “Will” Kim has been in the country for 35 years, since age 5. He is a legal, permanent resident with a valid green card, researching cures for Lyme disease in a doctoral program at Texas A&M. He had a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana in 2011, which is now legal in his state. He went through removal proceedings for that 2011 conviction after he served his punishment, including community service, and paid for an expungement. Customs and Border Protections response was basically We don't care, it's on the record. You're not a native, we need our stats, "because we can".
He went to South Korea to attend his brother’s wedding. On his return he was detained for more than a week by immigration authorities at the San Francisco International Airport, sleeping in a chair and living off food sold in the airport, then was put into removal proceedings to be deported, held at an immigration detention facility in Arizona. There has been no communication with Kim since he's been transferred to Arizona
His lawyer has not yet been allowed to talk to him

The article didn't say recreational, did it? Presumably they are assuming he had the drug for medicinal purposes. Which is still bad journalism, of course.
@goat Maybe Shooter added the misleading part?
Either way, weird miss on Texas.
Sorry, I was only reading Shooter's post, I thought it was a quote. It said "possession" not "recreational use" which is still illegal by default, but I could see how people might confuse one thing for another. It's still very poor journalism, but it's an understandable mistake, especially with the sorry state journalism is currently in. Not a lot of Rhodes scholars working for legacy media at the moment.
She should sue.
That just puts a bigger target on her back. Even legit a visa holder can have it revoked on a whim and be deported. See Harvard and Columbia. The student and her family just need to wrap up their affairs and head home before they end up in Rwanda. Which is what the fascists have wanted all along.
