Funny, now that AI is encroaching on the livelihoods of "knowledge workers," it's a different story. Blue collar grunts being made obsolete was progress; now that middle and upper middle class paper pushers are threatened, it's time for UBI and a total revamping of our economy, lest they take a hit.
That's one of the most fascinating aspects to me. The people who never imagined they would be subject to automation-induced redundancy are actually the most vulnerable. It's easier for AI to replace a lawyer or an accountant than it is for AI to replace a Wal-mart stocker. Even within the white collar ranks, it's the higher ranks (except for the very top that protect themselves, of course) who are most in danger. Dollar General will still want humans as store managers directing other humans and controlling the keys and counting the deposit. But the regional directors and vice presidents that exist solely to cascade corporate mandates from above to the dozens of store managers who report to them? They are entirely unnecessary, and become more unnecessary by the minute.
@goat I don’t think that’s true. I think those are the people insulated. Where relationships matter. Decision-making that contemplates same. I don’t think regional vp is at risk, or the partner, but the management trainee and the associate. AI will perform tasks not manage people and relationships
Agree to disagree. Gradual during the booms of industrialization or the computer age were decades. This will happen in less than 10 years. not enough time for schools, culture, etc. to adapt to the new normal. I tend to align with @goat in that this will probably be a societal shift.
@unclemark I know how to back a trailer and drive a skid steer loader!
I bet you can air up your own tires to the proper PSI as well, show off.
Check this out, I can even CHANGE a flat. And, not to brag, but if I'm feelin really frisky i can change brakes and rotors (discs only, fuck off with drums).
A little background on the gent. He was born in China and now lives in a slightly white nation who he thinks are the oppressors (whatever that means) and I guess is trying to get anyone not white on his side to take over. I use to be pro immigration, but have realized over the past 10 years it's a bad idea as more and more people like him come here and vote for more radicalized ideologies. Mamdami being the most obvious example (And with the rise of all the anti-white sh#%).
The most likely outcome is Balkanization of the U.S. if we don't stop or drastically cut 90% of immigration in my opinion. And no, I don't think wars. I think people will just migrate to states that they feel more comfortable in as politicians who control the money will continue to use rhetoric like the gent above. I'd love for all of us to get along, but it seems people are too tribal for that.I've personally never given a sh#t, but I'm a cool cat.
This is a long ended way of asking does any of this concern you? Is there a point it would concern you and force you to change your stance?
Even if he and those who think like him manage to get this disparate group of immigrants and racial, ethnic, religious, sexual/gender and political minorities to coalesce long enough to succeed in putting "Whitey" in his place, how long does that honeymoon last before the infighting begins? Empowerment is a noble goal but it derives from the word power and Power + Human Nature = Majority of the Fucked...always has, always will.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
The energy supply will always be AI’s limiting factor. The thousandth time AI does something will use the same amount of energy as the first time. And energy is becoming more costly, not less. While we can have AI prepare and serve a cup of coffee, we might never use it that way because of needless energy consumption.
I don’t think AI can ever replace a lawyer. If it does, said lawyer would be doing non-lawyer paralegal work. Various kinds of law-office automation greatly impacted the efficiency of lawyer output throughout my 50+ years in the business, but it has never impacted job #1 of a lawyer.
