"Bombs Away:LBJ, Goldwater and the 1964 Campaign That Changed It All" - originally broadcast 2014.

Oddly popped up last night after I had mentioned the 64 election in a post, so I had to watch.

Interestingly, they had a guy who helped create the LBJ media (including the Daisy ad) who also lamented how the change from boring old "I like Ike"-type ads to "attack" campaigns that tried to "represent" an opposition candidate in a certain way - whether it was accurate or not. Even had a phone call from LBJ worrying whether the Daisy ad "had gone too far" AND an LBJ/RFK phone call where RFK tried to push LBJ to focus on economics and poverty and LBJ advocated making Goldwater look "extreme."

Showed Rockefeller getting almost booed off the stage at the GOP convention. Mentioned how the "east coast liberal GOP" had supported civil rights - did NOT mention the Democrat filibuster.

Worth a watch if you can.

Just curious -- are you a sustaining member of PBS?

I give to KET (Kentucky Educational Television), which is a PBS affiliate. (They still give DVD’s of Ken Burns Civil War as a reward for donations).

KET is the PBS station we got when I was a kid.
