Since the towers came down, is it weird that the first I do is check my news feed to make sure WW3 hasn't started? I check back here every once in a while to see if there is an update on the death toll from the alleged Gazan famine. Still, haven't found any that reach four figures. Even the UN has the number now at 463:
Why does that matter? Because we had media outlets like the Guardian peddling the notion that Gaza was undergoing a catastrophic famine of historic proportions. The below article said it was going to be the most intense famine since WW 2 in March 2024:
Think about that: the article itself lists Sudan and Ethiopian famines (and even Yemen that wasn't declared a famine) that took hundreds of thousands of lives. (Of course, it conveniently omitted the Chinese famine in the 50s-60 that took tens of millions of lives. Probably just an oversight, I'm sure. 🙄 ). Compare that to . . . 463.
The author of the Guardian article even defined what the "rule of thumb" is for famine conditions and what that would mean in terms of deaths for Gaza--12,000 a month. This is in March 2024. Yet the total over the entire war is . . . 463. And yet again, in November of 2024, the author makes the same claim of "famine" in Gaza, not apparently realizing he was contradicting his own definition in March.

Alex de Waal is an academic at Tufts, a humanitarian worker, and an opinion writer. He's not a journalist. His famine projections, thankfully, were very wrong. It doesn't appear he's written anything for The Guardian since July 2025.
The point you make in your last sentence could apply to any false or misleading content, or clickbait, that litters social media. Frankly, though, I believe that someone with the intellect, focus and effort required to read a lengthy piece is more likely to seriously revisit a topic or rethink a perspective than someone who lives on social media and is sucked in by the algorithms.
But back to the numbers in Gaza. I guess 463 dead from famine isn't too bad, unless you're the parents of one of the kids who died from starvation. What about the other Gazans who died - - 70,000+, mostly civilians - - during the war, and the hundreds who have died violent deaths since the ceasefire was announced? Seems like that provides a much more cogent basis for outrage.
