I hope this doesn't come back to bite Central Indiana when our robot overlords take over.

This is one where the opposing issues seemed somewhat legitimate. I don’t know much about data center ops, but I cannot imagine they being threat many permanent jobs with them? Once constructed, I’d imagine you need a few onsite engineers, a bunch of security and what else?

I think part of the opposition is to how few jobs would be created. Google rep announced the pull out just before the council was going to vote on the rezoning.

They consume a great deal of resources while providing little in the way of positive local economic impact.
The juice isn't worth the squeeze

Bizarro world as Pub is against it and Dem for it.

Exactly.
Data centers have one of the lowest employment density rates, similar to warehouse and logistic hubs, while simultaneously having some of the highest energy/resource use rates.

sometimes I leave porn open on my browser when I fall asleep. Damn, am I the problem?
This is a legitimate issue. Data centers are part of an ever growing demand for energy (and their needs are exponentially higher than most businesses). When do we stop being afraid of nuclear. Also, small nuke plants close to these data centers would save large amount of power in shorter transmission distances. I don't see a world where renewables will keep up with power demands as more and more people live their lives online.
Cunundrum indeed.

I posted in another thread, but there are a few mini-nuclear energy companies that are raising a ton of money for this exact purpose.

The question I would have is: What are the true economics of the situation? If you have farmland that is not being utilized (or won't be in the near future), what is the payback period for local counties or townships that are allowing these data centers to be built? If Google, etc., are seeking tax credits to offset any liability, this makes literally zero sense, given the relatively low employment compared to the economic and energy considerations.
There could be some considerations I am missing, but this isn't like TSMC investing in a 500K+ manufacturing operation that would create thousands of jobs and a windfall of downstream economic benefits (new restaurants, etc.).
