I'd question whether the Republican Party was ever dominated by "principled fiscal conservatives." In fact, its a combination of traditional Republican policies and outcomes--not being principled about spending, drumming up an optional war with nation building that was botched, and the 2008 Financial Crisis--that led to what Schiff is complaining about.
