We've opened the strait before when Iraq promised to close it. We'll do it again.

Iran closes waterway, gas prices soar. Who controls the Strait of Hormuz?

iraq didn’t have the geographical advantages of Iran.

This analysis says it’s possible but requires considerable boots on the ground, almost certain high casualty numbers from urban guerillas and cooperation from an neighboring ally which might not be forthcoming. It also probably requires a few weeks preparation to bring a full contingent (which Iran will observe and thus beef up counter-defenses) or using currently available forces which would be far riskier.

Iran attempted to close the strait in the late 80s.

Eons ago?!

The linked article is my reference point. I’m just a curious onlooker.

Without its navy, Iran basically has two remaining layers of its multi layer defense, mobile missiles and mines. Evidently they’re already placing the mines. Once placed, according to the analysis I linked, they can be protected by the mobile missiles.

The analysis is based on decades of US strategy for how to deal with the Strait of Hormuz. evidently aerial strategies aren’t considered workable without a land force to stymie the mobile missiles.

In the span of just a few hours Monday, Trump claimed the war he started unilaterally was almost over, that Iran was within two weeks of producing a nuclear weapon last summer, that it possessed American Tomahawk missiles and used one against its own schoolchildren, that he had to attack Iran because it was about to attack the United States, that other Gulf states had joined the fight against Iran and that, oh, by the way, his war was not actually almost over.

Not a single factual assertion was supported by evidence, and a couple were demonstrably false.

Lindsey Graham with an interesting choice of words when asked about the Iran War:

“We’re going to blow the Hell out of these people.”

Then he went on to talk about what the U.S. Military is doing in Iran.

It's a dizzying and unending blizzard of lies, even worse than in his first term when fact-checkers tallied tens of thousands.  When he opens his mouth or "truths" something, I now assume it's a lie unless and until proven otherwise.

We have a president with absolutely zero credibility.  Amazing.

The US military has been the strongest in the world for a very long time, and obviously a great source of pride. Our actions and success typically spoke for themselves.  There was no bombastic boasting, hype videos, and hyper-aggressive rhetoric.  The president, Secretary of Defense and military leaders would provide updates on military operations with facts, and in a measured tone.  Our military leadership continues to adhere to that longstanding approach but some civilian leaders, starting with the president, have gone off the rails. What we're seeing now is unnecessary, unprecedented and just a terrible look.

"'There are some in the Senate that advocate for war everywhere,' Luna wrote on the social platform X. 'Lindsey Graham is one of them. He does NOT tell the President what to do, nor does he control Congress.”

"Luna added that she wants 'NO BOOTS on the ground,' saying that if Graham 'wants to go fight in a foreign conflict, let him be the first to volunteer.'

@big-ryan

Trump dipped his toe into the wading pool with Venezuela. Then he decided to sky dive into the middle of the Pacific Ocean with his Iran conquest. This is a true test of his bravado. Masks down.

He’s threatening Iran with unimaginable damage as if he has unlimited resources which we don’t. He’s magnanimously promising China and all others safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, even offering insurance guarantees Congress hasn’t funded. He’s assuring Americans that this “excursion“ will be short and economically bearable.

Meanwhile, Iran is a huge country with geologically diverse terrain and no good entry point for any sort of ground invasion so Trump is realistically limited to aerial attacks without going full-on Vietnam.

So…let’s sit back and watch. Of course, as always, we root for the United States. But this time, Trump’s legacy is really on the line. There will be no spinning the outcome for better or for worse.

Huffpo reads like The Onion or The Babylon Bee, except they take themselves seriously.
