It's a function of how long you have left before retirement.  I'm working my way towards conservative.

Those that stay highly aggressive even in retirement usually fare far better than those that stay conservative but it's obviously riskier.

What one should do really depends on how much you have.  If you have a bit of a cushion I would stay aggressive.

I am 51. I am far ahead of the median. 401k is pretty broad based security tilted index funds with some riskier international funds thrown in. Brokerage is heavily focused on technology and enerty funds/etfs. Starting to put away more cash in HYSA than just emergency funding as a hedge. Still getting 3.35% there.

so probably:

80% 401k

15% taxable brokerage

5% HYSA

Will look to slow the 401k a bit and slide to the brokerage in hopes of maybe getting out before 60.

Is sports betting considered aggressive? What if I am up 50 units betting on the Cubs this season?

I'm behind the 8-ball, but I'm also still relatively young, so I'm currently going the aggressive route in the hopes of getting a bit of a catch-up boost.

I feel like I'm sort of playing catch up too, although the guy who helps me invests suggests otherwise. I'm actually meeting with him next week to discuss investing more aggressively.

I like the idea of retiring around 60 or so, but health insurance is the kicker. More than likely I'll be a working stiff at least until I'm eligible for medicare.

Like @ohio-guy said, health insurance is the kicker. Shits expensive yo. House will be paid off in about 5 years. No real debt beyond that. I've been with current wife for 18 years so no SURPISE!!! paternity bullshit anywhere.

There's some home remodeling we want to do. new deck. shit like that. I may "work" past 60 assuming AI doesn't take all the easy/coast type jobs so I can get insurance. If I can stay with current company in a less stressful role I'd do that as well.

@larsiu

Health insurance is stupid expensive. I pay out of pocket. And I still had to pay a fortune for all my daughter’s medical shit.  Health insurance.  Multiple child support payments.  Terrible investments.  Retirement is nothing I even really think about

I'll go work at Costco or someplace like that for the insurance if I have to.  Maybe I can get a job at White's filling propane tanks and mixing paint.
