Indiana daycare problems

I had grandkids attend a daycare that suddenly closed, the state greatly reduced vouchers which cost them half of their clients. They just couldn't make it work. The remaining clients were given a week to find someplace else. They aren't on the vouchers, they could find a place to start in January. So in the meantime we drove up to watch a couple of days, and they are taking time off.

But for many that is going to be a much harder transition. Daycare is very expensive, and stressful enough. One of the stories below says 19% of daycares have cut back on rooms, 11% say they may close.

The link below says I diana is a state where childcare costs more than tuition.

I really don't have an "answer". But if we want a strong Hoosier economy we need a way for parents to be able to go to work.

I had 3 kids by the time I was 21 years old. This was before school districts had preschool. I worked full time days, and the wife worked part time nights so one of us was always home. When they were old enough (2, 4 and 5) we found child care on the north side of Indy and the wife took full time day job. We lived east side, the wife worked downtown and I worked south side. She took the 2 and 4 year old to daycare every morning, I took my lunch hour to pick up the 5 year old from half day kindergarten and drop her off at daycare and get back to work with no time to spare. The wife picked them up on her way home from work. We did this for a few years (by this time I worked close to home) until our two oldest were in first and second grade, and found a sitter for the youngest closer to home. By the time they were all in full day grade school, they did after school program so I could pick them up after work. Summer break was a nightmare of it's own, though we found a high school baby sitter in the neighborhood. By the time my oldest was 10 or 11, we had her take CPR and babysitting classes at the YMCA and she watched them off the bus in the afternoons and during the summers. I still worked close by and was able to come home for lunch during the day and check in on them.

Point being is childcare, especially reputable daycare, has always been both expensive and hard to come by. I realize first hand that even for a nuclear family with a strong familial support system it's a juggling act of epic proportions, and sacrifices are the rule of the day. The challenges are exponentially more difficult for single parent households and/or without strong familial support systems. But, like every other challenge we are faced with we find a way.

@all4you we had to be really creative. My wife took a part time evening job. She would drop the kids at my work at 5 to be at her work at 5:30. The thing is, I worked a ton of OT. Of course my job didn't pay OT, I just got comp time I could never use. I would work with the kids playing on the floor of my office. But virtually no one else was around.

When they got school age it was Girls Inc and Boys and Girls Club as my wife returned to full-time.

@arthur-dent And politicians wonder why people are having fewer children.

This shouldn't be a problem.  Conservatives have always told us that when government programs are slashed due to tax cuts, rich people who don't have to pay taxes anymore will stampede in to fill the gaps due to their charitable natures.

All is well.

We had to use daycare for my daughter her first year.  The cheapest place we could find was $16,000 a year, and it was a dump.  Women who worked there spoke little English. After that first year, my wife started working weekend nights so she could be home during the week with the kids and then I had them on the weekend.  I just looked it up, and AI said the typical cost for infant daycare today in Chicago is $2,900 a month.

It does suck and it's why I b#tch all the time about government programs and spending.  It only ends up making it more difficult. If they helped you'd see higher birth rates in Europe.  You don't as Ramrod already pointed out. The answer to the problem is either grandparents, Bitcoin, or massive productivity gains (AI).
