Including representation by geographical area is an effective counterweight to one-party politics.

Wait, gerrymandering an area to be +25 to a party is a counterweight to one-party politics?

The best counterweight by far is proportional representation.

You are correct to a fault.  The resulting coalitions that are a product of parliamentary systems are often paralyzed.  That’s today’s Germany.

@co-hoosier what makes you think things would change? In some states, the Libertarian party may get a seat or two. In most states it will be 4 one major party and 3 to the other major party. The Green,  Natural Law, et al won't hit the barrier.

Garland:  He wasn’t going to be confirmed even if there was a vote.

Sure he was. He was about as milquetoast a pick as you could ask for. It was 2016, not 2026. Plenty of Republicans at the time would have allowed the President to make his choice , as was the norm at the time.

Not in a bi-cameral system like all states except Nebraska used.

@co-hoosier what do you mean? Nebraska has a lot of votes for 3rd parties? There were 49 seats up in 2022, 95.5% went D or R. So at most, 3 independent seats. Maybe none if they went to people of different parties.
