@bradstevens I agree. After learning more about the situation, I agree. Not really censorship. More pettiness than anything. That has blown up into a big mess.

Seems to me its like The Indianapolis Star insert back in the day for pole day and the race. Every article in it, and there were many, was for the event.

Nobody thought it should have editorials in it.

@openwheel It was like every major paper when huge events happen. I always bought the Daily News in NY, the Post as well, but loved the days like Opening Day, NBA, NFL, NHL playoffs when local teams made it because they had that insert with nothing but coverage.

Times have changed I guess. I always got the IDS Fridays for their football pages.

For every person this pisses off it elates another person.  So I don't see it effecting much. It's blown out of proportion.  Who gives a shit about the IDS. No one read it anyway

A whole lot of over reaction going on both sides I believe and I haven’t seen any proof of censorship.

I started to post about this yesterday, but changed my mind. However, it seems to be an issue that is gaining traction in the media. Has anyone been keeping tabs on the IDS fiasco? I wonder how it will impact sports? Mark Cuban tweeted yesterday he wasn’t happy about IUs censorship of the paper and he specifically mentioned money he had donated specifically to fund the paper. Several reporters with ties to IU have also reacted to IUs stance with disappointment. Does this impact Cubans donations to athletics? I see many alums say they were halting their donations to IU because of their actions. This is a concerning issue it seems. I am not saying it will go that deep, but if this is the reason we lose someone like Cig I will be extremely disappointed. The timing of all this is terrible.

Not censorship, but the university DID want to dictate content, and went scorched earth when rebuffed.

@bradstevens Agreed. A lot of people dont like the school administration (there are some valid bones to pick) and look for any reason to ding Whitten. People seem to gloss over that we are in an age where higher education is changing rapidly on its own (enrollment across higher ed down and expected to keep falling), and when you throw in how politicized higher ed is getting its a total mess.

All things considered I think she is doing a pretty good job at securing IU's future. I would much rather we cut cost inefficient programs and secure state funding etc than be a school like USC who is running a multi hundred million dollar deficit...

From an athletics perspective though I am more than happy with the admin. IU is either top tier or competitive in nearly every sport, elite in football (still crazy) and have hope in basketball. I will take that every day that ends in Y.

Both sides went scorched earth.

The IDS is alive and well on their website, writing whatever they want like they always have.

This is just fine for 2025 since everyone gets their news online.  Better for the environment too!  We know the IDS cares about the environment…

They wanted a Homecoming edition (one edition) with positive news embracing homecoming.  They didn’t want a bunch of negative editorial crap trashing IU when alums are returning for a big football weekend.  People don’t need to read that sh&$@ for just one week.  When everyone goes home, then they can get back to spewing negativity in their rag.

An entire edition without a piece or two crapping on Whitten or crapping on funding cuts as compared to football?  The horror, we rebel!

To make the best argument for IDS proponents one can make, technically, if that were the goal, they should have just handed that job off to the marketing department, and if they wanted to keep the name for nostalgia or whatever, call it the Indiana Daily Students (Or Indiana Daily Alumni--no would notice) and be done with it.

Would there still be outrage?  Probably from the people who always want to be outraged. But I can see why a nominal "news organization" doesn't want to be ordered to be a marketing team.  Not really censorship, though.

Nobody that’s not an elderly person reads newspapers anymore since everything is online! I don’t even remember the last time I even read the Indystar in paper! IDS’s demise would happen sooner or later.
