On the one hand, it appears the Democrats are walking right into this mess entirely oblivious.
On the other hand, if Trump's main play here is using the shutdown to replace large swaths of the federal workforce, then I don't think there is any deal the Dems can reach. Even full capitulation would probably result in the Repubs trying to add even more unpalatable provisions as last-minute amendments or during conference.

The base doesn't want a deal with Trump. That has everything to do with the messaging around Trump. He's a fascist...blah blah blah. It's a big problem for the Democratic leadership...but it's one of their own making
@mapletom Obamacare added around 20 million people. They'd be pissed off, but almost everyone else would get cheaper healthcare. I don't think it would hurt the GOP.
@spartans9312the party of big government being for a shut down now sums up where Democrats are currently. Oppose Trump no matter what. Even when it doesn't make any sense to do it.

@snarlcakes I think it was Texas Tech that did a study, uninsured ER visits dropped 14%. Since that is the most expensive possible way to get healthcare, that helps. Now, with the 24 million on ACA plans, add in ALL preexisting conditions and all parents keeping their kids on plans until 27.
Hold on... I've been thinking all this time that Trump and the Republicans control all 3 branches??? Why are we headed for a shut down again? And why, on earth, would it be the Democrats fault?
You do understand the republicans don’t have 60 votes in Senate?

That's definitely a problem. I'm wondering whether this threat to fire everyone is just a negotiating tactic or Trump's true goal. If it's the later, the Dems are dead in the water, anyway, because that means Trump wants the shutdown, and he's successfully found a way to blame the Dems for it.

I think it is Trump's goal, but polls are far from clear that Democrats get the blame. And no other president has fired everyone, so he will get the blame for that.
