The MAGA GOP focus on spending with respect to immigrants, but they are also taking a lot of stances that are not so popular and they hope that people don't notice.
Money for top proposals in cancer research? MAGA says nah. Can't afford that. Grandma had a good run. Besides, breast cancer affects women. Can't have DEI shit.
Money for new antiviral drug research / pandemic prevention and the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections? Nah. Viruses and bacteria don't really exist, by executive order, and RFK doesn't understand that antivirals and antibiotics are not synonymous with vaccines.
Some money for healthcare so that medical bills are no longer the main reason for personal bankruptcy (not the case in any other developed nation on Earth). Nah. Tough it up. None of our CEO buddies are worried about that crap.
Other things too, such as green energy research so that the USA someday might be a leader in what will certainly be a major economic driver.
To be clear, I want balanced budget and controlled spending. But I also want much more logical prioritization on what programs are funded.

I know the Dems don't have the stones for this. But a prominent group of Senate leadership and House leadership should hold "press conferences" hourly until the deadline. They should post what the GOP proposed bill is, and what their concessions are. Make damn sure their concessions are things that would be popular nationally. Health care stuff, Medicaid, etc... AND flip the script and put some new immigration measures in there. Increased funding for border agents, points of entry processing technology and staffing, etc...
Allowing Trump, Miller, etc... to control this narrative... will continue to allow them to gain and accumulate power.
And then if the shutdown happens, every single hour post things that people are losing around the nation.
Main point... make some concessions, make sure the nation knows you are, flip the script on them and the shut down.
I know they won't do it. They're weak. But its annoying as hell, and dangerous as hell, that the GOP is going to be instrumental in taking the government down, and will largely be praised for it.
@iunorth you're calling on the Dems to make concessions but this is a clean CR that doesn't change the funding level for any areas of government. It's Democrats demand for concessions that is going to shut the government down.
Well, a CR that locks in many major decreases in funding levels for many areas of government, decreases that were accomplished by executive actions. Specifically, by executive orders made in defiance of prior congressionally-approved funding levels. Such illegal rollbacks ought to be addressed in any new budgeting bills. You want to defund the CDC, pandemic preparedness, child cancer research, etc? You want funds to equip a new gold-plated plane? Ask Congress to do it, don't just do it yourself, illegally.
