the best part of estate planning was flat fees. I did have to keep track of time the rare occasions one of my clients died, but most of my time was, "yeah, I can do that. $450 for you, $650 for both."@goat billing in six minute increments was the most miserable thing i've done in my entire life. ever.
@goat i think for quality of life the estate planning lawyers i know probably have it best. and there's still some juice on top of the flat fees as when they probate/fight etc. they get a piece

My best payday to date was a small slice of a wrongful death. Wasn't huge, but it helped make a 12-month probate (deceased had a very bad DIY will) feel worth it. Not to mention having the hospital pay enough money to cover all the probate plus extra put my client at ease.
With that one, though, I quoted a max, and stopped billing after a certain number of hours. I figured part of that mess was also on the job training for me, so I didn't want to soak my client. Then I got my % of the settlement and it was all good.
@stollcpa had to be talking about back in the day. $3k - $5k minimum now

Gotta believe he was just talking about a basic will.
@stollcpa that stuff can go from pretty simple to complex. my old partners would have a big folder they'd give them with all the shit re healthcare directives etc.
more importantly you've related you have no interest in being a mod. has that old crescent moon expressed interest and asked to be evaluated? i think we'd all agree that he's probably best equipped. my only reservation is posters trying to take advantage of him early in the morning
I’d tell people that want a will that says everything goes to spouse at death and equally to all children at death of both spouses go online and prepare their own wills. That way I would have no liability.
My wife and I did a will with an attorney last year, but we found that much of the heavy lifting we did on our own- designating beneficiaries (spouse) and contingent beneficiaries (children, equally) on each and every account (e.g., Fidelity, Vanguard, T. Rowe Price, banks, etc.).
The will itself was partly covered by an employer legal services benefit ($120/year payroll deduction). We paid a few hundred extra for a living will and Lady Bird deed on the house.
Was a relief to get done, after a mess we went through with my wife's parents estate.

@unclemark that's not proper estate planning son
For a lot of my clients, a basic will plus medical directives was all they needed. The will would specify wishes for minor children in case both parents died, and also set up a basic trust for them with the remainder of the estate.
@stollcpa the problem is that a lot of those guys just aren't around enough to be good mods
On moderators if the choice was mine I’d do Marvin, Goat, Twenty and BradStevens and Hoot1.

@bradstevens has hoot even made it. you don't want it. goat doesn't want it. marv is mia and twenty fck. twenty is rarely here and when he is at 2:30 am i wouldn't put it past him to shut the whole board down
@stollcpa he's terrible. he punishes the retaliation. i've got shitter going around clogging up my entire notifications like a two year old and unclemark will only punish the retaliation. circle joe and some really bad posters who never contributed or even attempted to contribute uncle mark ignored. if they are on his political tribal team he looks the other way. he's unacceptable as a mod. fun as a poster. but not a mod. if they raise money i won't contribute a penny with mark as a mod

Those are all terrible ideas.
@stollcpa My radical idea is that we're all just generally polite and respectful to each other so Sammy doesn't have to worry about it so much.
Having been part of one of the many experiments of active users also moderating a political board, I just don't think it works very well. Mark did a great job, and too many of you hate him for it. I think we did okay when I was part of a team with NPT and Cajun, but doing it on my own, all I did was cause problems. I suppose we could give the job to NPT, and Sammy could give me and mark fake badges so you could blame us when NPT deletes something. That might at least feel familiar.
