Why don’t commercial flights go over Antarctica? They are hiding something.

Then f'ing move.  China ain't gonna stop polluting.

China is producing renewable energy at an incredible rate. In May of this year, China brought enough solar/wind online to power Poland.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/26/china-breaks-more-records-with-massive-build-up-of-wind-and-solar-power

They now produce 3 times more renewable energy than the US, and a larger percentage of their energy comes from renewable.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_renewable_electricity_production

There are many bad things to say about China, but China's push to renewable far, far outstrips ours.

Sea levels have risen 8-10 INCHES since 1880.  It would take 17000 years to cover LA.  Plus we will spend more protecting infrastructure compared to what it would cost to rebuild.

it's happening faster and faster, though. Four inches just since 1993.

Not sure what makes LA special, but at current rates, low lying cities like Miami will be under water this century. Some, like New Orleans, already are under water.

Wake me up when we start increasing the surface area for water absorption as opposed to decreasing. When the people that are complaining about the increase in water levels take out their blacktop driveway and put in gravel. When we remove the bypass around cities. When counties decrease the number of paved roads. When farmers remove the tile from their fields.

As the surface area continues to decrease then less water absorbs and more is put in storm drains and ditches which ends up running to the next area downstream.

Then we can talk about how many have removed themselves from the grid.

Until then it’s just like the abortion topic…a way to raise money

That's not remotely how any of this works. Sea levels are rising because ice is melting. That's a fact.

China and Asia are the problem and they're only going to produce more.  Climate change (in the media and funding) will decline in the future. The need for energy is too great now because of AI.

It’s exactly how we get excessive runoff. Nobody cares because they would have to do something themselves. Which they would view as an inconvenience. It’s better to complain about someone else. Does rain absorb into the ground more on grass or blacktop? How about gravel vs blacktop? Do fields that are tiled drain more water than those that aren’t? Where does the water end up? If you sit in your lawn chair on the blacktop is it hotter than if you sit in the same chair in the grass?

@snarlcakes huge swaths of China are still basically America in the 1700s. Of course they produce a lot. Many homes are still heated by people putting coal into stoves. But as a whole they are spending a hell of a lot more than the US on renewable. We didn't try to go from 1790 to 2025 in 30 years. Many of us resist even now living in 2025.

Yep.

Much of the renewables is in the wind-swept deserts.  Much is also hydro.  To have a stable grid, you still need coal to back up wind and solar.

Rain runoff has zero to do with ocean levels.

@arthur-dent it's only liberals resisting reality. The U.S. and Europe are no longer the problem with global emissions (I personally disagree it's an issue, but that's a separate argument).  It's China and Asia.  Also, we need a crap ton more energy production, not less.  It's a national security issue. China isn't slowing down.

https://twitter.com/tonyclimate/status/1849946629488738581?s=46

Liberals need to move onto a new boogey man to gain access to money. Someone needs to convince them to start advocating and building nuclear plants if they're scared of the climate changing.

@snarlcakes again, there are huge sections of China that are 3rd world. It is impossible to go directly from 1790 to 2025. They are greatly outspending us on green. If we spent on green what they are, we would be in 2025 and not stuck in 1950.

@co-hoosier why not nuclear instead of coal?

Look at the pushback we have on EVs. They produce more power across all speeds, do not require an air cooling system, a radiator, oil, a complicated multi speed transmission. That is a lot less that can break down in an EV. But there are people out there that hate, actively hate, EVs.

As to problems with AGW, look up heat waves in India and Pakistan. They are getting worse and reaching the limit of human survivability. Now think what happens when millions of people in two adjacent countries that HATE each other are displaced. Oh, actually, don't think about it. The current president forbids the Pentagon from considering how global warming impacts national security. So we can't come up with plans to deal with that. Oh, and an area less impacted is Kashmir, not just a great rock song but an area that could lead to war between Pakistan, India, and China. War between those 3 certainly could never amount to much.

https://www.americansecurityproject.org/climate-change-induced-heatwaves-may-make-south-asia-unlivable-by-2100/

It is much more realistic for wealthier people to buy EVs (secondary market where poorer buy isn't nearly as developed), it is far easier for wealthier people to buy $30,000+ HVAC systems that are very energy efficient. The same effect happens with nations. China is spending more on green in real dollars and in percentage of GDP. We should be able to afford it far easier. Our countries are close to the same size, but we already have an energy infrastructure. They have reduced coal as a percentage of power by 10%.

Nuclear is happening, albeit slowly. It's shed it's knee jerk reputation for being a threat to mankind. People have mostly forgotten about Three Mile Island and the China Syndrome.
