The magnitude of this stuff is mind-boggling. An exabyte is 1,000,000,000 gigabytes. Multiple exabytes are produced and moved on the internet daily. The CERN data storage facility above “physically crossed the 1-exabyte threshold using roughly 111,000 physical devices (primarily hard disks) networked together to store data.”
The hardware in such a center fails about once an hour so they have data duplication occurring constantly.
Cooling the hardware consumes 30-40% of the electricity used (less in Nordic countries).
Most storage is owned by Amazon(!), MS, Google, Meta snd Alibaba, in that order.
Fascinating stuff.
