Had a conversation with my neighbor tonight about competition among kids and parents.

If you were going to send your kid to a sports camp, would you intentionally hide that fact from your kid’s friends if they were playing the same sport, maybe trying out for the same team?

Would you hide or tell your kid to not say anything about a test prep class for the SAT because they would be competing for the same admissions slot at colleges?

My neighbor said he absolutely would because they are competing against their friends.  I find that abhorrent—friends help each other out and I don’t want my kid to go through life thinking he has to look upon everyone as a competitor of some sort.

Im sure some of you have dealt with this before.  Am I just a sap?

Remember Wanda Holloway?  I would hope that isn’t typical.

I'm with you. I'd try to get others together in the same age group and see if we could agree on a camp for them all to join together, or put together a study group for the SATs. They will have plenty of time to live in the real world when they are older.

And maybe if we teach not to be assholes, the real world will eventually improve.

@bradstevens you need to embrace your inner overbearing, sports dad or your kid will be playing violin with the Asians.

I would prefer my kids play violin with the Asians. I failed there.

Son didn't make the high school hockey team last night.  Think he's done.  Too discouraged and embarrassed to play for another club.  Sucks.  But he needs to find something to do to fill up that 12-15 hrs a week that's not video games.

Quite a few things I'd like to do with the Asians, but none involve a musical instrument.

@bradstevens there’s always cross country and track, they don’t have try outs. Farva was all conference and look how he turned out.

@bradstevens

Does the school have a mock trial team?  You could be coach.

@bradstevens does your kids school have clubs?  My youngest joined the lego club.  Doesn't have to be anything exciting, but since she's athletically challenged, this is how she's choosing to do an after school activity, and we are more then okay with it.
