@mapletom @bradstevens over the top rhetoric is definitely part of it, clearly, but damn these message boards they get on must be really bad. Culpable too.  Honestly we just witnessed this in real time.

raja Jackson had that incident with the Indy wrestler. Wrestler thought it was part of the act.  That beef. Squashed.  Misunderstanding. All good. Then between the time of the initial incident and the attack all the posters on his stream he was interacting with pumped him full of anger until he acted. “REAL SHIT!!!!!!!!!”

now imagine the confirmation bias. Goating. Clout chasing that comes from these dark websites and feeds these weak-minded kids and people.

these politicians and media types and celebs are dogshit, of course, but these platforms.  Bad news. And last I looked as third party publishers are largely immune

I agree with that but will the tech bros cut off my supply of puppy dog Reels if we fight them too hard on this?  What about my Backyard Beefs videos?  They’ve got leverage on me

@dbmhoosier the left are freaks at this point.  No sane person stands with them. And I love the stop posting things we don’t like. Here’s an idea. Change!   If you hate the facts don’t support them.

Interesting YouGov: Americans mostly reject political violence, mostly agree it's a problem, but there are a few differences.

As others have pointed out, the very liberal are more likely to accept violence, while the very conservative are more likely to think it's a problem - which I was wrong about earlier; I think I was being fed outdated data from long before the election. The same divide occurs for young vs. old. However, no matter the demographic group, pretty much everyone agrees it's a problem, and pretty much everyone agrees it's wrong.

https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/52960-charlie-kirk-americans-political-violence-poll

I did find a few other interesting tidbits, though:

1. All demographics peaked in their concern over political violence after the attempt on Trump, then gradually backed off, only to dramatically increase their concern since Trump's inauguration. Both conservatives and liberals have registered their highest concern with violence after the Kirk shooting.

2. Americans generally are worried about left violence and right violence the same, with, unsurprisingly, the right mostly worried about the left, and the left mostly worried about the right. Moderates are actually more worried about the far right than the far left (30-18), which surprises me, because moderates tend to align with conservatives in most of these polls. This could be a side effect of how unpopular the Democratic party is, so that the "middle" in polls has more liberals than it usually does, because so many liberals don't want to actually identify that way.

3. One place the libs and conservatives did differ, though, which fascinates me, is the different patterns their responses took after particular events. The Dems have basically stayed within a narrow band, responding that they were worried about political violence between from 44% (Shapiro) to 58% (Kirk), while conservatives jump around wildly, from 31% (Pelosi) to 67% (Kirk). I'm not sure what to take from that, but I do think it's interesting that the trends are not mirror images of each other, but that conservatives show much more variation.

You'll have to go to the link to see the graphs, because YouGov doesn't make hotlinking very easy, but you'll see this interesting pattern in the second illustration.

Who decides what is constituted as hate speech?  This is really dangerous. IMO.

Another example (like anti-vax and stolen election conspiracy theories) of ideas or things that used to be predominately leftwing. Lefties have long called for hate speech laws and prosecution. In addition to the fact that it violates our history of protected free speech, who will decide what is hate speech and what isn't?

@aloha-hoosier legal system.  You can tell more often than not. Content/viewpoint vs someone in your face trying to provoke violence. Remember these schools also have a duty to create a safe environment

Courts will decide, but for the most part they already have, and 99.99999% of the time, hate speech is indeed free speech. Crossing into the exception for inciting violence is very difficult.

Don't listen to anything Blondi says.  And she was corrected by Stephen Miller and Harmeet Dhillon.

Last person who got in my face trying to provoke violence found it. His mouth was wired shut the first month of our senior year while the damage heeled. Sometimes people don’t like getting what they ask for. 😉
