I find this kind of bean counting on political violence pretty fruitless. I’ve seen graphics like the Pew graphic being circulated that make the claim right wing terrorism is more prevalent. And if you look at the underlying cases it’s hard to disagree. But the underlying methodology I think casts too wide a net and is oversimplified. The laundry list of things labeled as right wing political violence by CATO dwarfs the left wing category:
- anti-abortion
- anti-immigrant
- anti-government
- anti-Semitic
- Really any kind of racism other than anti-white
- anti lgbtq
- any kind of digital trail that would point to something considered a “right wing” internet space
Sure all of those things could be Right wing and probably even skew that way. But you wind up making some nonsensical classifications.
- Free Palestine nut burns the PA governors mansions. Clearly anti-Semitic, clearly right wing.
- Black guy reads white supremacist content online and labels himself a white supremacist. Kills two Hispanic people. White supremacist ideology, Clearly right wing.
Just a couple of examples. I think most cases are more nuanced than Kirk.
