Not many of those around ... a guy like Ware being available is an anomaly. If a player truly has elite talent, he'll likely be NBA-bound after his freshman season. And any elite, NBA level guys, the same... more coveted, more expensive.
True... I gather those must likely come from high school
I am guessing if they want to put together a top tier big ten roster like Michigan has the NIL will have to increase a good 5-7 million imo.Ballo was a top player who got 1.2 million a year later the top guys got 3 million plus. If these prices continue to rise at these insane rates 10 million NIL is not going to buy you much in the way of bigger time players. Just three legit top tier players will probably cost 9-11 million this spring I am guessing. It needs to be capped but until then its going to cost big for top players.
$15M is the magic number for me. Need $10M to buy your starting 5 and the rest for the bench. Should be able to acquire top 10 talent with that.
Yep given the way the prices keep rising 15 million will be needed imo. All the the starters will cost 2 million each likely
@hoosiers94 THAT I agree with wholeheartedly. If the money is equal, though, I don't see DD beating out the Dukes and Kansases of the world to land Top 20 HS recruits. The Hoosiers would probably have to overpay, but I think that "strategy" went out the door once the Bigfoot Brigade closed their checkbooks. IU's brand isn't nearly as strong as those of elite programs, which is sad but true.
At the risk of having tomatoes throw at me, I'd love to see IU follow Painter's model: Land recruits who stay multiple years, and use the Portal sparingly to fill holes. There are very few who can and have pulled that off with success, however, so it's unlikely.
One issue with buying a few guys at a high number is keeping team chemistry with those who didn't portal and get much less.
I don't see any way around anything other than the Purdue model, even for us. Nothing wrong with it. Recruiting and then fill in a couple or a few spots a year with the portal. GOOD freshman are still going to cost a bundle. Get three or four good ones in every year, and then retain.
Should be able to kick Purdue's ass.. Which should mean legitimate deep tourney runs.

Seems like that is somewhat the goal. Maybe not quite to Painter's level, but this staff is obviously valuing HS recruiting at a much higher level than Bigfoot (which isn't saying much to be fair).
We have 3 solid guys next year and 1 the year after so far. Continue doing that and we could get to a point where we're only looking to add 3 or 4 from the portal at worst most years and only targeting top guys.
Has to kill this portal offseason regardless for it to matter in the coming years.
Should, but Painter is a FAR better coach than anyone IU's had since Knight.Should be able to kick Purdue's ass.. Which should mean legitimate deep tourney runs.
Note: I don't count morons who received 5-year show-causes. Yeah yeah, it's legal now ... but that's irrelevant. It was illegal then, and that fool kept dipping into the cookie jar. I genuinely don't understand the Sampson supporters; he set the program back years. IU did the right thing by self-reporting. Tbh, I was happier when Sampson was fired than Woody.

I think this may be the first thing you and I disagree on... I don't think we should have reported Sampson at all... our punishment and the road it's put us on wouldn't have been any different if we got caught , which we may have not... handle it internally. Then what 2-3 years later it's no longer illegal...
hard to say where we'd be at or if he wins us a title or not but we'd have been way more competitive and not in this purgatory we now find ourselves in...
as if others weren't doing the same thing.
Anyway I can see the other side , water under the bridge ...
@hoosiers94 That's totally fair. If he had done it once--only at IU--I wouldn't think the way I do. But he did it at Oklahoma, knew it was wrong, then brought that shit to Bloomington. It's trivial, sure, but I also look at the players he brought in. Good god. They could ball, but what a bunch of miscreants.
If Houston played Satan and a group of demons in the title game, I still wouldn't root for Sampson.
@gthomas While Painter's level of success would certainly be welcome for a while--it's much better than anything we've achieved lately--we've stated that a goal is to hang another banner. We won't do that with Painter-style rosters. You need some NBA-level elite guys for that in this era, not four-year college journeymen.
I hardly consider Smith, Loyer, and TKR "journeymen." And, while Purdue hasn't brought home hardware, at least they have the potential to do NCAAT damage most seasons.@gthomas While Painter's level of success would certainly be welcome for a while--it's much better than anything we've achieved lately--we've stated that a goal is to hang another banner. Maybe IU should worry about being a consistent NCAAT team first ... because the Hoosiers are so far from a banner it's disheartening. Purdue is a much better program right now.
@hoosiers94 Strongly disagree with your assessment of Lamar, but the rest is pretty solid.
The poor roster build was bad but also something that you could give a pass to. It's year one at a program and conference at a level he had not seen yet. Flimsy but still a plausible excuse.
the entire team going MIA for full halves in multiple games is atrocious. All around terrible coaching. I'm not sure better roster talent will make up for this shitting coaching.

That could work in theory over a number of years down the road but it will not happen next year. He will get three years no matter what but its basically a normal rebuild pre nil going that route which means next year probably will not be that great either. Missing the tourney next year would not be good.
