Yes, but when Tucker Devries also airballed an open three (got backboard only), Sisley had quick enough hands and coordination to snag the surprise rebound that almost hit him in the face. When he badly missed that corner three in the 1st half, I said, "Well, that explains his lack of minutes."
That said, I still think there's something there, so I'd like to see him return.
We've been stone-handing those to the other team all year! Those type of plays are why Sisley should be on the court. He doesn't have to score as much to help.
his ceiling is much higher than most in the roster. Not sure why he isn't getting the minutes , aside from being a freshman and going into a freshman funk not sure what he did. Hes had some moments where he's unproductive but shit that's par for the course on this team
@hoosiers94 You can visually see how far behind everyone else he is defensively, with off the ball positioning and rotations. He's decent guarding the ball, but very behind off the ball. Outside any other inside information, that almost has to be it.
But Wilkerson feels being 'close enough' is defense half the time.
If Sisley is badly behind this far into the season than either he's uncoachable, or our staff can't coach.

it's definitely the latter
Maybe. I think while Sisley's dee could be a lot better, he has contributed defensively OK, for a freshman. He does some things most of our roster can't.
Wilkerson seems to need the kick in the butt. As he will not be playing dee very tough, then all of a sudden he plays a long stretch much harder. As if it wasn't built into his DNA at his previous school, but is willing and can, when Coach reminds him. Or demands it.

@openwheel A lot of things can lead to this... Sisley's high school programs might not have focused heavily on helpside and rotations... and/or never made him focus on them because he was likely always way more advanced physically, and it didn't really matter. Getting comfortable with certain kinds of help and recover principles, can be confusing. Especially with how fast and physical the game is in the Big Ten.
My guess... he's struggling getting comfortable with the overall speed and physicality, its causing him to miss reads and rotations, and CDD has felt like we've had enough depth on the wing that he didn't need to put Sisley out there. AND... CDD isn't spending a ton of time this time of year focusing on core fundamental things like this. I think if the 2nd part is true, that's a big flaw in his approach.
Long winded way of saying, probably a bit of both.
@gthomas I meant that the Minny game didn't change my mind on our season, our basketball team in general or where we are headed.
@iunorth Obviously we are not mathematically eliminated. For all practical purposes, the season is over. I know it is for me. Let's say we play over our potential (potential as defined by what/how the team has performed up to this point), we back into the tournament b/c of a weak bubble and a win over an Iowa or Nebraska in the BTT. I'm still not interested in watching them. Now, if the coach starts making better adjustments mid-game, Wilkerson starts taking the ball to the hole more and drawing fouls, Bailey starts pulling up for 6 foot jumpers instead of challenging guys at the rim, the team cuts/move on offense for complete games, the defense picks up, they quit relying on the 3 point shot so much, they take command of a game and hold that command until the end, can get the ball inbounds and break a press, then I'll get interested.
What do you think the chances of all that happening are? I'm putting it at 5%.
In short, this team doesn't pass the "eye-test". Hasn't for 90% of the year. Isn't going to now.
Not trying to start a fight, this is just where this life-long IU fan is at this point.
I hope Sisley stays.
@redandrowdy I think banking on, or even hoping, that the team will change in as many was, at this point in the season, as what you listed is probably not a great idea. Its not likely to happen. I would contend though, that those various things you mention don't need to happen for them to produce some fun, and exciting times over the next few weeks.
They don't need to completely change who they've been to win at OSU. They just need to do what they've shown they can do well, more consistently, for longer stretches of the game. Beating OSU to finish the regular season would be fun, and exciting, no?
BTT... first round game against someone like Penn State or Rutgers... seeing them play decent and thump someone in Chicago, would feel good. But it wouldn't really move the needle much. But if they were to continue the solid play, and beat the 7 seed UCLA, Iowa maybe... that would be pretty cool and exciting. And then if they play decent and compete with whoever the 2 seed is... that'd be fun.
If enough of the above things happen to get them in to the NCAA tournament, they'll likely be facing either a 6 or 7 seed. The list of those teams, according to today's Lunardi bracket, are as follows (Kentucky, Vanderbilty, St Marys, Miami FL, Louisville, Wisconsin, Villanova, BYU). There are some winnable games in there, and some really fun matchups. And then obviously, if they were able to win that first round game... the potential 2nd round matchups would be a lot of fun.
Quite obviously... we could lose to OSU, and play poorly in the BTT, and all of the above is moot.
Just saying that despite the inconsistencies, and how we've looked thus far this year, there are still some potentially fun things to watch... for me anyways. Obviously no issues with your views too! But man, no matter how it happens, for me, an NCAA tournament that has IU in it is quite a lot more interesting and exciting than one that doesn't.
We don't have an innate right to great teams. I'll watch what we put on the court and root for our school. Like every other schools' fans do. And hope the program improves, so I can take pride in that. Want us back at the top.
Season is still interesting to me right now, and it's been fun - and not so fun - all year. Anxious to see how we play tomorrow. Win tomorrow - or we have to go on a run in the b1g tourney I don't think we can.

Tomorrow is an absolute must win imo. Every year we talk about how IU will need to win several in the BTT and it never happens or has only happened a few times. This team is simply not good enough to go on a run in the BTT.
@arioznahoosier4554 I think you're most likely right. But this is the type of year, and IU has the type of resume, that they could conceivably still play their way in even if they lose tomorrow. But practically, a lot of dominoes would have to fall the right way for that to happen. So they just need to win tomorrow.

I mean sure they would still have a small chance of getting in but the odds would go way down.
