A $10M payroll--purportedly one of the highest in the nation--and folks are hoping IU is Top 20 in YEAR 2? Given his resources, DD should have the Hoosiers in Michigan territory if he's all that.
Maybe. Woody did leave CDD with a completely broken program with almost no usable players or coaches (really just Sisley, who committed despite Woody, and maybe Goode, another kid who just likes IU).
Getting a whole new team in place in the portal is expensive vs having a stable program with homegrown talent. And we also have an entirely new staff.
I definitely think we should expect to make the tourney the season, but personally I can wait until year 2 to be a consistently ranked team.
And I don’t mind high expectations if you’ve got ‘em. This is just how I see it.
I would guess Sisley committed knowing (or making the very likely bet) that Woodson was on the way out, looking at the recent Football hire and assuming that IU would find a similar type of successful coach for Basketball.
@tammany It will be interesting to see DD's recruiting philosophy. Obviously, he had no choice but to grab 13 portalers for this season, but, in the future, I wonder if he'll focus on turning over the roster via the portal, or try to build continuity by focusing on high schoolers.
Like all Hoosier faithful, I'd rather eat glass than compliment Purdue. But ... I love Painter's roster construction strategy: Get guys who will stay multiple years, and use the portal sparingly (if at all). I used to live and die IU hoops, but I'm not nearly as invested these days because of roster turnover. Hell, I probably won't know who's who until December (well, except for Goode if he's granted an extra year).
@gthomas Lools like we’re gonna sign quite a few high school kids, which I think is great. They build the foundation and continuity we need.
Yea, honestly PU is doing a great job, it sucks.
@tammany When I get bummed about IU hoops, I need to remind myself of one thing: Woody is in Sacramento, not Bloomington.
@gthomas Yep. Thank goodness. That nightmare is over.
Also, it's very funny how he "retired" from IU, and then unretired so quickly!
@tammany Yep. When referring to Woodson's departure, "retire" must always be in quotes.

I think (not my idea obviously, it's been said many times) that recruiting high schoolers who will stay four years will be the excption for most teams in this new era. Good players will be testing the market for better NIL and revenue share every year. Why wouldn't they?
There will always be a few guys who are still in it to stick with a school and get a degree but you won't see top teams where all or even most of the players are in that category.

He is going to load up on plenty of HS kids. DDV and his staff have put in more effort on the HS recruiting trails in a couple months than Woodson did in 4 years.
Now it might be a couple years before we start seeing that good HS base as we'll probably be a bit portal heavy until things can be stabilized.

My hope would be is if we're a top-20 program with top-10 rev/share NIL, we'll have a good shot at keeping the kids we want to keep. There won't be too many better options than us.
Of course, we have to become a good program for this to happen...
I don't know what to do on this here forum now that Bigfoot's gone. Roughly 99.7% of my posts were dedicated to bashing him (and/or Weekend at Bernie's). Now I'll actually have to be ... positive. Ugh.
@gthomas Speaking of, I wonder what happened to the old lounge Woody would hang out in with his staff and pals…
@gthomas do you really think the dudes DD went after cost IU 10m? NFW- the couple guys he did look into that were reportedly asking for bags we seemed to pass on.
jist bc IU had 10m does not mean that much was spent- im gonna bet this roster was around 5-7 mil and that’s what woody spent on 4-5 guys
