@arioznahoosier4554 Probably right. But as long as its an appropriate percentage to your overall budget, I don't think its a lot different than what redshirts have always been. A couple hundred thousand against IU's NIL budget isn't a whole lot different than the old days of tying up a scholarship for an extra year.
I was probably wrong that red shirts will make a come back. That's just not how players think, any more. And putting any money on a guy that isn't going to play, just won't happen at enough schools for red shirts to happen wide spread. But if I'm a solid Big Ten level prospect, that has little to no NBA chance, I'm going to try to figure out how to get 5 years of NIL/College years.
@arioznahoosier4554 Practically, redshirting gives a guy like Ristic one more year of earning what could be the most money he'll ever earn in his entire life. If I had a kid like Ristic, that isn't going to play in the NBA, but is talented enough to play mid to high major college bball... I'd push like hell for a redshirt. 5 years of a few hundred thousand a year, and 5 years living the college lifestyle, is better than 4 years.
I actually fully expect redshirting to make a big come back, for this reason.
We've got to get some kind of performance-based component in the player payments. I think if you red shirt you should have to at least take a cut in NIL and revenue-sharing. You aren't contributing anything to it!
None of them take any cut they all get raises every year because NIL is totally out of control. Reed Bailey got paid more than ballo. There is a reason true fan leal wanted a 6th year he knew he would be paid big bucks.
@vanpastorman Train a recruit in a way he should go and he will hit the portal at the end of the season. 😉
@unclemark Football just moved to a player can play 9 games and still RS. They just need to move to 5 to play 5 across all sports.
That's just silly.
Honestly, Ristic must sort of suck if he couldnt find minutes with the state of our guard play. He looks decent, so maybe he doesnt play defense yet.

These are paid pro players there should no longer be redshirts. I have no connection to any of them anymore they are mostly here for the NIL check and are not student athletes anymore for the most part. You should not get paid now to sit out a year get four years and that is it. It has gotten beyond ridiculous leal wanted a sixth year so he could get more money.
In a silo, Ristic losing his redshirt playing 30 mins this season means very little.
In the grander scheme, it's a bad look future recruiting wise that it happened.
You don't want to be seen "stealing" from athletes earning potential in the current state of college athletics.

He could only garner 1 minute of playing time with a roster this bad. Anybody who's using him as an example isn't somebody we need to worry about going elsewhere.
@arioznahoosier4554 NIL is absolutely out of control, but the Transfer Portal is worse. The NIL genie is out of the bottle and can't be put back in, but why can't the NCAA (or whomever) bring back the sit-out year for transfers?
On that note, how about four playing years and you're done (with only one RS/transfer year available)? If you play one second, that's it ... you've used up a year. If you transfer a second time, the sit-out year should count toward the four.

That is what I said four years and that is it you are done. You are getting free college and likely a ton of money four years is enough. None of this five and six year crap.
@arioznahoosier4554 I think a redshirt year still makes sense for injury or development but you should have to forfeit most or all of your NIL/revenue share if you redshirt. Five years to play four, and those are the four years where you can earn money.

Yeah that is fine I am thinking of guys like Leal who were trying to milk a sixth year for more NIL when he had not ever really been injured. It was a complete joke and knowing the NCAA I was actually surprised they did not give it to him.
Now try getting players to agree to a deal that doesnt pay them much for a redshirt year, compared to schools offering to pay them. Definitely wont get redshirt guys that have potential.
