Ristic wasted year...

Just to add to this terrible season is the waste of Ristic's year.  Could have been a RS year, but no.  Our coach decides to play him 1-2 min in garage time to dribble out the ball in several games.  I'd transfer if I were him.  Just totally screwed the kid out of a year.  And today's world, screwed him out of more potential income.

Who cares? If he's only good enough to warrant 1-2 minutes of play time with this roster then he's hardly got any negotiating power.

Yeah, I mean I want him to be a good Indiana player but if he's not, then best he moves on and we get someone better. IDK which way it will turn out but if he couldn't compete for minutes in this years group that's not a great start. Hope it's just freshman adjustment.

They need to come up with something like they do in football, where a handful of appearances don't count against you and you can still get a red shirt year.

You think Ristic wanted to redshirt but Devries was like "Nah, we need some garbage time ballhandling."

More likely it was the other way around.  Redshirting him was probably the surest way to ensure he'd transfer.

In this day and age would good does a reshirt do when they guys are looking for new programs each year anyway. If you redshirt you still gotta pay him to come back and maybe its not enough so pointless.

@arioznahoosier4554 Ain't that the truth. When IU decided not to go to the NIT or that other thingy some didn't like it. But as I thought about their decision it made sense not to play. Normally we would think that getting more games in is good for the next season. But that isn't the way it is anymore. This team will be brand new just like it was this yr.

While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

That dude is 20 years old already.  He'll be back in Europe before his eligibility runs out.

@arioznahoosier4554 Practically, redshirting gives a guy like Ristic one more year of earning what could be the most money he'll ever earn in his entire life.  If I had a kid like Ristic, that isn't going to play in the NBA, but is talented enough to play mid to high major college bball... I'd push like hell for a redshirt.  5 years of a few hundred thousand a year, and 5 years living the college lifestyle, is better than 4 years.

I actually fully expect redshirting to make a big come back, for this reason.

Why would coaches tie up their budget in a guy who isn't going to play and isn't bound to stay at their school long term (where the redshirting shows the most results)?

@gros-louis And that's the flip side to my post above.  I personally think Ristic would be a perfect red shirt candidate.  But I'm not at practices every day.  He sure looks like a guy that will become a very good college level lead guard.  But in today's day and age, maybe tying up a few hundred grand, and a roster spot, for an extra year, isn't the play...

But from a players perspective, it makes a ton of sense.

Paying  a guy money to redshirt in this day and age is poor management. Rosters turn over each year now. You could spend all this money to redshirt him and he could flip you the bird and leave that spring. Like I have said this is no longer college these are paid pro athletes.

@unclemark Football just moved to a player can play 9 games and still RS. They just need to move to 5 to play 5 across all sports.

We've got to get some kind of performance-based component in the player payments. I think if you red shirt you should have to at least take a cut in NIL and revenue-sharing. You aren't contributing anything to it!
