I’d gladly take Jake West in the portal.  Especially if we could get an elite, physical PG.

@hoosiers94 I did and I think many of us did. I thought Tucker would be more consistent, but I wasn’t convinced we had a lot of talent and I think we all knew we were in desperate need of a big man. I thought we were a bubble team, which we are. Portal relations had been made far before DeVries was hired. We were lucky to get Wilkerson. I expect to do better this year and start seeing results next.

What do you mean by "Portal relations had been made far before DeVries was hired."?

Are you talking about the players initial recruiting out of high school?

Otherwise, CDD has hired on March 18th.  Dusty May was hired on March 24th.

So this narrative that CDD was hired late and didn't have time to recruit the portal is fiction.

I have also read that CDD took too long to assemble a staff.

According to Google, May didn't complete his staff until April with three new coaches hired then.

CDD had two coaches and the SC coach come with him from WV.

The transfer portal opened on March 24 and closed on April 24th.

CDD had almost a week head start on May, over 10mil in NIL plus had coaches in place and yet assembled an inferior team.

The conclusion I would draw is that CDD and staff is not a good evaluator of talent.

Maybe that is the conclusion Dolson drew also, thus the hiring of a GM.

The other possible conclusion is that he thought that he could offset sheer physical and athletic ability with a good system. He underestimated the opponents due to inexperience in P4 play or overestimated the value of his "system" in countering that. Either way, the next roster will tell us if he's correcting any of that.

He's not playing a board game.  It's common sense in real life that height strength and athleticism will 9/10 win that battle.

I will certainly not put any stock into the ranking of a portal player. Bailey was very highly ranked and even Kentucky and Kansas wanted him. Those two guards Woodson got the year before were both top 20 portal ranked and both were mostly busts.

Indiana men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries gained his third transfer portal commitment today from forward Reed Bailey, who joins the Hoosiers after three seasons at Davidson.

Per 247 Sports, Bailey is considered the 36th best prospect in the portal this season, with a four star rating. He was ranked as the seventh best power forward in this portal class.

You would have thought  an excellent point guard and a good power forward would be the two players he brought in to showcase his boy. Thats what I didnt understand. With those two spots in good hands Tucker is the shooter and probably has a nice year. Why try to surround him other shooters but no help at two positions?

RUMOR (that I think is true): Trent Sisley will be exiting via the portal. PLEASE NOTE...this is not FACT but a rumor (that I think has substance).

The optics of this are not great but if he were not from Indiana, people would shrug their shoulders. Trent was on a substantial NIL deal to commit to IU under Woodson and DeVries honored it. He will get better as a player but he was lost basically any time he saw the floor against high major competition. I would not freak out until we see who is replacing him. What if IU replaces him with Tre Singleton and Sam Orme at the 4 and Trent was not keen on taking less money and being third string? Of course, if IU replaces him with two guys from low majors and they stink while Trent goes to Butler or wherever and averages 18 per game...well, you can imagine the discourse.

We'll see how this plays out but the next 30-45 days are going to be bonkers.

@tjinman1987 For what he became at the end of the year, its not a huge loss, purely basketball wise.  But for what he looked like early in the year, and that he's an Indiana kid, and that it sounds like it might be about money... Not good, not good, AT ALL.  Taking all the symbolism, and bad optics of losing him, and putting all that aside.  If a primary driver in this ends up being money, that means we likely don't have much more of it to spend than last year, and that's a sign that Indiana's leadership, and stakeholders, really don't have much of an appetite to be elite again.

If a player can't earn playing time on the basis of how he practices and plays, not much point in spending NIL and a scholarship spot on him. Logan Duncomb is averaging over 18 a game it at Winthrop, does anyone really miss him?

@iunorth I wouldn't view it that way...IF Trent Sisley portals (still very much a rumor...one that Trilly has posted as well though), it could also mean that he was asking for an amount that Carr and DeVries does not believe he is worth and instead of giving him $1 million (hypothetically), they believe he's only worth $500,000 and they have an honest conversation about what his role would likely be and he's not happy with it.

I'm not going to post every rumor that I see or hear but the ones that I think have substance or are corroborated by others, I'm going to post. Some will end up correct, some will probably end up incorrect.

@tjinman1987 Obviously we probably don't know the exact numbers, but if he did get 1 million last year... the risk in keeping him, at that number, is everyone else will demand that too, or more.  I have no idea how these sorts of things play out... do the kids all know what the others are getting?  Did they all know Sisley was getting an "inflated NIL"?

But the immediate thought that popped in to my head was IU should be able to swing a few extra hundred K, and if they can't, or won't... that worries me.  Michigan would have figured it out, and kept him, AND went and got his replacements.  Its not a good look.

I would be shocked if he didn’t leave.  And he may be doing so without asking for anything.  Why assume this has anything to do with what IU wants to pay.  Maybe he just doesn’t want to be at IU (and who can blame him? )

@gerdis Or maybe Tre Singleton and Sam Orme are coming in (I don't know) and both are superior players to Trent Sisley (not particularly debatable right now) and Trent Sisley did not believe being third on the depth chart was a good thing for his development?
