Was he not working the portal for West Virginia. And none of those players bought into him ... and hence didn't go to IU ?
@hoosiers94 Was concerning that other than Tucker not one player from the WVU roster followed DeVries to IU. The high school recruits also had no interest in IU.

thats weird.
Dusty only had 1 follow as well
@ge-off You are right. Vlad Goldin was the lone player from Florida Atlantic that followed Dusty to Michigan. There were two other players from that Florida Atlantic team that could have helped Dusty in Ann Arbor. Elijah Martin went to Florida for his final season where he went on to win a national championship and then get drafted in the 2nd round by Toronto. Good decision by Martin to not follow Dusty. The other player was a guy by the name of Nick Boyd, the Wisconsin Big 10 2nd team all-conference guard. I don't know Boyd's story other than he played 3 years at Florida Atlantic and during that 2023-24 season was the first guard off the bench for FAU.
A major difference between May at Michigan and DeVries at IU is May only had to bring in 6 portal players while DeVries had Tucker and Trent Sisley as his lone roster players. DeVries could offer far more opportunity for playing time than could May. Starting WVU guard, Sencire Harris decided to transfer to Cincinnati and KJ Tenner, who appeared in 30 games for West Virginia as a freshman guard went to Murray State. Jonathan Powell who played over 30 minutes per game as a frosh at WVU decided to transfer to North Carolina and Amani Hansberry, the best big for the Mountaineers is now starring at Virginia Tech.
Money, the coach, the school, opportunity to win championships, playing time, etc. etc. etc. are all factors in making portal decisions. What the West Virginia players were prioritizing is beyond my scope of knowledge. Personally, I found it odd that only Tucker followed his dad to IU. Seems like perhaps another player or one of the high school recruits would have come along to Bloomington. Playing time opportunity was something Indiana could offer.
Maybe some coaches dont push as hard for recruits they spent all the other schools time and money on. I hate to offer up something not negative. Not every Coach is like James Franklin.
And DeVries has three freshman recruits. Sounds like some of our previous loved Woodson also.
@bigmike No question - I think the players and fans were pissed he left, so they decided to go elsewhere? I know one of the recruits was maybe player of the yr in WV, so playing at home may have been a factor? Who knows - we will see in a few weeks DD's recruiting chops - I like the top 20 class that is coming in.
Precisely, as a Mountaineer I'd have been pissed he was moving on after only 1 season. I'm certain I'm not alone.
Unlike the prior coach, DD and his staff are placing effort into recruiting high school talent. Looks like we will have some good and interesting high schoolers to watch next year.@bigmike No question - I think the players and fans were pissed he left, so they decided to go elsewhere? We, the fans, just want it all and want it immediate.
Woodson - we all hated that he only recruited the portal, no HS kids, all bigs , no shooters, no work ethic, teams were lazy like him
DD - didnt get any bigs - did have some shooters, but not consistent, is recruiting HS kids, but we do not want to wait for them to develop, rep as a hard worker, team, for the most part, has played hard
We need some combination of the two

I continue to think it is very likely IU is going to utilize international connections via Ryan Carr to dip into the international market. I'm not talking about borderline roster guys like Ristic or Acimovic...I mean legitimate prospects. Names to potentially know: Sayon Keita (center), Narcisse Ngoy (center), Adam Atamna (guard), Mouhamed Faye (center). There are probably others and I'm pretty excited about this particular avenue of adding to the roster.
No, I don't. James Franklin was recruiting for Penn State for several weeks on Vanderbilt's dime. At least that was said, and I believe it. That he knew he was leaving for weeks, yet his whole staff kept recruiting, then those later pickups went to Penn State.Maybe some coaches dont push as hard for recruits they spent all the other schools time and money on. When Cig was hired he didn't keep recruiting out of JMU .
And maybe DeVries recruiting tailed off a bit knowing he'd be recruiting for Indiana... He had to expect he was getting the Indiana job, but he still had a season to finsh for WVU.
But as far as Cig, yeah, I could also see a coach having a different view and not bringing recruits. Although it seems fair to immediately contact them. Not the same as knowing you are going and recruiting on the current schools dime for the next school though. "Hey, I want to sell you on WVU, but by the way, what do you think about the Hoosiers?"
@tjinman1987 Yes sir, it's about time IU caught up to the modern reality of recruiting international players. Failing to do so results in missing out on a great deal of exceptional talent.
@hoosiers94 I did and I think many of us did. I thought Tucker would be more consistent, but I wasn’t convinced we had a lot of talent and I think we all knew we were in desperate need of a big man. I thought we were a bubble team, which we are. Portal relations had been made far before DeVries was hired. We were lucky to get Wilkerson. I expect to do better this year and start seeing results next.
