With the hiring of Ryan Carr, IU's preparation for a critical portal cycle is now in full gear. I think having a thread dedicated to the transfer portal (which will be a top-speed flurry of activity) makes sense and I've begun compiling a list of players that COULD make sense. These are guys that I think have some connection to the Darian DeVries or someone the coaching staff or to the state or IU. If I have information that indicates there is a real reason to pay attention to a particular player, I'll note that accordingly. Otherwise, I'm just trying to connect dots. If you have any players you watch or hear about or are aware of that I don't list, mention them in the thread and let's talk about it! As news of targets begin to emerge and visits are scheduled, I'll update the thread accordingly.
If we assume IU keeps Trent Sisley, Nick Dorn, Aleksa Ristic and Jasai Miles while everyone else moves on...add the three incoming freshmen...that leaves 5 or 6 spots open for portal shopping. At minimum, the Hoosiers would need a good point guard/a lead scoring guard/a couple of shooters and a couple of legitimate Big Ten big men. Without further delay, here are the players I have come across thus far:
-Jalen Haralson - Freshman at Notre Dame - things are not going well at Notre Dame and Haralson has had a pedestrian first season in college. He's not currently a good perimeter shooter but he has an interesting skillset and should make a big jump for his sophomore season. If he portals, you'd have to think IU is a contender.
-Tre Singleton - Freshman at Northwestern - state title winner for Jeffersonville and DeVries poked around to see if he'd be interested in flipping from NW and he's had a decent freshman campaign. I do wonder if he's a fit for this roster with Sisley/Manhertz/Karvala already in place...other forward additions might need to be more immediate impact guys.
-Finley Bizjack - Junior at Butler - 6'4" scoring guard that is shooting 36%+ from 3 and averaging 17.4 PPG for Butler...he attended an IU game for some reason and Kenny Johnson did recruit him previously. He's a good offensive player but is average (at best) defensively.
-Jaquan Johnson - Sophomore at Bradley - undersized guard (he's listed 5'11" and that's being generous) but he's averaging 17 points per game while shooting 40.2% from 3 and has the top Bayesian Player Rating (BPR) in the Missouri Valley. There's a presumed connection to Drew Adams and Mike Bargen.
-Sam Orme - Sophomore at Belmont - Orme is 6'8" with good length and he's from Carmel. Mike Woodson was never interested in pursuing him but IU did monitor him in high school. He has two years left and is averaging 12.7 points per game and 5.4 rebounds in 25 minutes per game for a Belmont team that is 25-4 and is number one nationally in effective field goal percentage. Orme is 37-101 from three this season. He's a good player that is rapidly improving.
-Colby Garland - Junior at San Jose State - 6'0" guard that played for DeVries at Drake. Garland is averaging 19.4 points per game with 4.5 APG/2.1 turnovers per game. Garland had a nice game against Michigan State earlier this season.
This list is going to evolve but it's a start. Obviously, I'm sure the list Carr and the Hoosiers will be working from will include connections we are not currently aware of.
Jack Smiley... Belmont... can shoot. From Valpo/La Lumiere. Had 18 the other night against Indiana st 6/11 from field.
averages 9 and 2.5 off the bench.
belmont is a well coached team very fluid offense.
but he's not NBA talent. Not are any of the others you mentioned ??? Maybe Haralson? We need 2-3 studs.
There have been rumblings about Daren Harris from Duke, as well. Former top recruit not seeing much action on a loaded Duke roster.
Amani Hansberry... Virginia Tech... Played for DeVries at WVU. Obviously the question would be why isn't he already at IU? But he's been a very productive big this year for Va Tech. Bigger body, physical. He'll be in high demand if he portals.

He went with Chester Frazier who's coaching there now and is a well known lifelong IU hater.
Haven't you noticed that no one from WVU came with DeVries, sans his son? I don't think the lure to play for DD is that strong.Amani Hansberry... Virginia Tech... Played for DeVries at WVU. I believe Nick Norton did?? Not Chester Frazier....hated IU as mentioned above. Kory Barnett was highly regarded, I think. He got the HC position at Oral Roberts. Tom Ostrom is an old Tom Crean asst. Glad he did not come. May be sitting out the year? Could not find an update. The last asst coach was Cavel Whitter, a young black guy. He's now at South Carolina Upstate.

Thanks for doing this. Gives us something to talk about.
I really like the idea of finding players who have some connection to Indiana, IU or DeVries. The trio of Myles Rice, Kanaan Carlyle, and Ballo was a disaster, obviously. This year guys like Conerway, Dorn & Miles aren't much better.
In general, I'd rather not see us trying to build a full roster of scholarship players. I'd rather focus on us getting the 3 best players we can land and keeping the guys currently on the roster to fill out the roster. Do you know why the 6 9 Bosnian(?) is MIA? If he can walk and chew gum I'd try to keep him as the back-up C. He looked to have some upside in his highlights. If not, move on. Like you, I'm ready to move on from the two guys who've sat out all year.
As an alternative to my plan, I guess if you could find 5-6 medium value transfers with solid Indiana/IU/DeVries connections who really want to be here, you could get by. I'd like to see guys with such connections who really hate to lose. I see that with DeVries & Enright only. Even Wilkerson, who obviously is very talented, doesn't seem all that bothered by our horrible losses.
Note on Singleton---he's 8/48 on 3s this year for NW. However, he's 60% on 2s, 73% on FTs, has more assists than TOs, and is a decent but not great rebounder.....so he could play for us for sure.

O.........were any of them any good? I think Small, who graduated, and Hansberry were the pick of the litter.
@mushroomgod That I don't know, but surely there were a few better players than guys on IU's roster. If not, that would mean DD bungled the Portal two straight seasons.
I don't care where they come from... as long as they are legit. Being from Indiana is great and a bonus , only if you can contribute at the level needed

Following up on this........I hope we take a Cig approach and get guys who have some #s on their stat line that are encouraging, rather than just having been highly rated out of HS with unrealized 'potential'. As an example, when I looked at Carlyle's #s and his 'highlights', it was a big wtf moment.......but then we read 4-5 analysts who insisted that he was a natural scorer that was going to fill it up.......Same for Myles Rice...I know he was all PAC-12 but when you looked at the highlights and his #s.......yet all we heard about was what a 'leader' he was. Same with guys like Tucker & Mobako transferring out after last year.........we said good riddance, but the portal rankings loved them.
Frankly, the portal is a crap shoot. Most teams who invest heavily don't get much of a return. See USC, Washington, Indiana in the BT. Compare to Wisconsin, with a smaller, lower-rated, and less expensive class. The other thing is..........foreign players look like a better investment than portal guys. I hope we have upped our game there, as we got nothing out of our foreign recruits. Hope the Pacers exec can help there.
I don't care where they come from... as long as they are legit. Being from Indiana is great and a bonus , only if you can contribute at the level needed
I hear you, but if they have no Indiana/IU/DeVrie connections, they better be gamers!! Our fans are sitting there watching guys like Rice, Carlyle, Moboko, Tucker, Dorn, Miles and saying who the f*** are these guys? Why are they here?
@tjinman1987 "Portal Kombat." So good.
