@evanalvarez8 Hire Dusty May away from Michigan. That would fix the basketball program instantly. Sadly, 2 years ago we wouldn't have needed a magic wand to make this happen. Could have had him locked up if we just fired Woody a year sooner like we should have.
@jhoban19 I still think McCollum, with NBA level talent, would be better. This is a "magic wand" type situation. Obviously hiring May last year, or this year, or whenever, would have been incredible too. I can't think of any reason why he wouldn't have brought in a very similar roster last year and then this year, at IU, compared to what he did at Michigan? There were a couple Michigan holdovers he inherited, that he wouldn't have had at IU last year, or this year. But maybe he'd have kept a guy or two like Reneau...and would be as good or better at IU, than he is now at Michigan?

I am convinced there are forces within IU that just do not want the bbal program to be a top team. There is no possible way you can screw up five straight hires at a school like IU without it being on purpose. Its a no brainer one would eventually work out but none ever have. Woodson I would not even consider a hire that was simply a grift for him from his buddy quinn.

I've always thought that was true part of the Old Guard (like Buckner). When people think of IU basketball they want them to think of those old teams and players. I really don't think they want any recent success.
Think of it like the 72 Dolphins popping the champagne whenever the last undefeated NFL team loses.

I agree. The only legit hire we made of a real coach was sampson but his other issues obviously screwed us and its been downhill ever since. Had we hired john beilen instead of sampson the last twenty years would look alot different. Back then this was still considered an elite job and we probably could of hired almost anyone we wanted. Instead Michigan gets the good coaches we pass on.

You can't confuse incompetence with intent and I think its clearly just a long case of incompetence.
The university would not have blown all the money on basketball that it has if it simply wanted to be bad on purpose. The amount of buyouts we've paid the past 20 years is absurd.
We've also had as many ADs as BB coaches during that time, and most all of them were terrible.
Now, the thing that has changed is that football is finally on top and creating excitement like we haven't seen in ages. There are a lot of ppl who are enjoying that and certainly thinking "man, it'd be nice to also be dominate in basketball at the same time". So, perhaps things will change finally.
The apathy keeps growing among fans, which is far worse than anger. All that "sleeping giant" and "this is a top job" stuff is pure bullshit. If it weren't, Knob wouldn't be the HC right now.
@hoosiers94 Do you have "Door Knob" trademarked? If so, I owe you a lot of money.

not yet but maybe I should look into that

It's still a top 10 job easily. But this isn't 1995. You can win big at almost any P5 program provided you have adequate resources.
UK and UL weren't able to pull in a big name coach. UNC and Duke hired Davis and Scheyer. Honestly being able to pull the coach from the 5th or 6 best job in the Big12 isn't bad. We just keep hiring the wrong coaches.
I respectfully disagree. I think IU CAN become a Top 10 program again, but I just don't think it is right now. It might have still been when Crean was fired, but Archie and (especially) Bigfoot absolutely killed this program. And the Sampson debacle didn't help. All that said, there had to be better coaches available than Knob. The apathy keeps growing among fans, which is far worse than anger. I'm glad BK isn't around to see the program he built turn into Minnesota South.
And the AD, while probably not a world beater, is at least competent. I think..... We've also had as many ADs as BB coaches during that time, and most all of them were terrible.

Yeah, I'm not sure its obvious, any more, that IU is either a top 10 "job" or "program". Its still up there though. And the difference between the "10th best program" and the 20-30th best program, is probably pretty small. The next IU coach that does really well, however, will basically instantly make it an obviously top 10 job or program. The interest is down, right now. But IU still has an enormous fan base, and following. It'll all come roaring back when there's good reason for it to. If DeVries doesn't do it, I suspect Dolson will have to "get lucky" and hire the right up and coming mid major type guy. The resent major bball program searches have shown hiring proven guys is becoming more and more unlikely.
’Id use a magic wand to permanently revoke internet access from whiny, perpetually negative IU fans.
DeVries clearly missed on building this year’s roster. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and another swing. If he lays another egg next year, then nature will take its course.
